Did your ranger hold gears on cold starts when accelerating? My 20’ did and I had to take it in for the TSB. Didn’t help lol

OP forgot to add in weight and air resistance.

It's why my NA Miata feels like it has more powah then a v6 taco even though it has a piddly 115 HP.

Thanks for this, needing to upgrade from my '99 which is actually running good at 245k but as expected lots of little things are wearing so not as confident driving down remote roads and into mountain snow. It's impossible to find a manual long bed V6 TRD. Still not sure if the 3rd gens will give a good 200k though.

Being a first time Tacoma owner and a first time Off-Roader, all of these complaints of the 3rd gen Taco are new to me as well. What I can tell you is that I studied trucks for my purpose for well over a year and picked the Tacoma for a few reasons. 1. Ruggedness, capability and reliability. No one does it better 2. Aesthetics. Its all opinions, but I think its the best looking truck out there 3. Ease of maintenance, repairs and upgrades/mods

In my time with the truck (close to 2 years), I've done everything I've intended with it, other than pull a small teardrop camper. Its been PERFECT. I understood before purchase that the engine in this truck produced its Torque and HP at high RPMs, as OP stated and I also understood that it "gear hunted." I see that many people have issues with this and I'm surprised. Smaller engines typically are designed this way(maybe not the gear hunting), and not only that, but the engineering and reliability of Toyota is LEGENDARY...why would you question how this engine and transmission works?

The last thing was my dealership offered a lifetime warranty on the drive and power trains (anything mechanical or that touches fluid, no electronics) as long as proper maintenance is performed and logged. So, even if the engine does fail, they will replace it.

    TOYOTA :)

I've had mine for a few years, a lot of road trips, DD, and offroading. put 90k miles on it but yeah... you gotta rev the thing. I've had a lot of vehicles with low end torque V8s and I6s. It definitely takes time to get used to how much of a dog it is under 2500 rpm but once you're over 3000 it rips! Mine's a manual on wide 33s so it's a lot more noticeable but my wife's '22 tacoma is an auto on 33" skinnies and it's a damn race car! I'd like to get that OTT torque tune to get a little more low end at some point.

I had a 2012 and a 2019 f150 eco boost. Both in the shop for serious issues before 35k miles. Before that I had nothing but mustangs and f150s and an Expedition in there somewhere. The eco boosts made me leave the brand all together and I haven’t looked back. I freakin love this Tacoma!

I read some article before buying my 3rd Gen, having last owned a 2000 Tacoma MT before buying in 2020, probably Edmunds. It suggested OffRoad MT and regear.

I drove it for 3+ years on stock gears w stock tires. Swapped to Fox 2.5’s w DSC and Deaver J66 and that made a big difference. Still a dog at low RPM as we all know well.

Regear really erased all the put put wimpiness. Not a complete transformation mind you, 3rd uphill at 15 mph still sucks, but any reasonable use of proper shifting and you wind up in the powerband.

The biggest difference is really 2nd gear. On 4.30, 2nd is useless for low speeds but 1st is a bear to smoothly enter and exit while rolling, maybe my lack of driving skill plays a role. On 4.88’s, 2nd gear goes from foe to friend. You can just stuff it in 2nd anytime you’re in a tricky spot as long as you’re rolling and you’ll be good to go. First is also much nicer for slow traffic, no need to feather the clutch until you actually stop vs before.

MT really should have come with 4.56, given the engine and transmission selection and the likelihood of tire upsizing.

One thing I’ll add to this. Modern engines have a rev limiter mostly set to the max rpm before hp/torque start to drop. Older cars didn’t have rev limiters so if u were an idiot you could over rev the engine and blow it up. If there was no rev limiter the engine could go to about 8k rpm before totally blowing up. So having the rev limiter set to 6k ensures you will never go close to rev limit. Now modern engine with upgraded internal can have the rev limit set a bit higher with higher compression ratios and bigger cams in mind because they allow for a high hp band higher up in revs. Without those upgrades you’d be losing hp if you tried setting the rev limit higher than what factory components can handle if that makes sense.

And that’s because ford designs those engines to have torque lower down. But then you sacrifice reliability when revving high and thier forced to set the rev limit far lower.

Some people may be dissatisfied with their "power". This may be due in part to the fly-by-wire throttle, hence a reason to use something like Pedal Commander. It takes the lag time out of the accelerator. Installs between the throttle body and accelerator. Modifies the voltage changes that occur when you accelerate. The previous owner installed one on my 2016 Tacoma. Test drive was interesting. The slightest movement of the accelerator pedal resulted in quick acceleration from a stop. Would almost bark the tires. The settings were quickly changed after I bought the truck. I felt it was causing drivability issues especially in stop and go traffic. Probably unnecessarily causing wear and tear on the drive line.
