    Afternoon,

I have a 19 SR 2.7 auto… wondering in terms of it being a half ton midsized truck.. with the 2.7 being a legendary reliability engine known for its longevity… compare that to the 99-07 GMT 800 trucks such as the Chevy 2500 6.0 gas with the 4I80 transmission. Also known for its longevity and reliability… yes one truck is ment for towing extremely heavy loads the other is not. But my question is are both engine and transmission combos on the same plane as longevity and reliability wise?

    Depends on who owns it.
Engine wise, as long as the 6.0 doesn’t have AFM, they are both great engines.

I really don't know enough about the differences, but if both are reliable, and if you are considering getting
one of the Chevy trucks, my advice is dance-with-the-one-that-brung-ya....

You know where that Toyota has been, and can extrapolate further miles on it.

If I read something in the 3rd gen forum that invokes an Einstein relativity equation it’s got to be Friday.

No money, all went to truck...
Friday!! how many people out there are familiar enough with both setups to properly answer this question? Can you compare such different engines and trannys? It's like asking, what is better, a cross country runner or a powerlifter?

    Here'w hat chatgpt says:

    Final Thoughts
    • Tacoma 2.7L: Best for light work, long-term reliability, and fuel efficiency.
    • Chevy 2500 6.0L: Best for heavy-duty use, towing, and worksite abuse.
If you don’t need to tow heavy loads, the Tacoma will be cheaper to own and run forever. But if you need a true workhorse, the GMT800 wins for durability under stress.

    Apples are better :)

If you are getting a 99 Chevy truck as a work truck, you should quit.

While we're at it, can we compare a 12oz hammer to a wrecking ball?

Extremely different use cases. There's really no area that they overlap in usage other than both being road-going vehicles. Which is what makes reliability so subjective. If you're just using it to get to work, the wear and tear are minimal, which equates to an overall reliability in that use case. But one is more reliable while towing 6,000 pounds, and the other isn't even rated for it, so one would tank that 'reliability' reference.

Might as well also compare the reliability of a fiat 500 to a Boeing 747 while charting maintenance costs as a percentage of the vehicles initial cost.

This reminded me of a similar situation.
The other day while shopping for groceries, I came upon a bag of frozen peas on the ground as if someone had dropped them.
I looked around to see if anyone was nearby who may have dropped them and noticed 2 other people in the aisle, a man and a woman, both appeared to be shopping separately.
As the man was closer to me i approached him first and asked if he dropped the bag of peas, he said " No, those aren't mine". So i thought to myself, well if they aren't his peas then they must be HERPES!
    Get it?

For the questions about the Chevy, kinda makes sense to go to one of the GM truck forums instead, right?

After seeing various responses… and thinking .. perhaps I should have orignally asked : a 2.7 auto reliability is the equivalent of which heavy duty version of truck engine reliability

Yea, your original post was confusing. Short answer the Tacoma 2.7 is known to be one of the longest lasting, most durable engines ever made. There was a guy in North Carolina who bought a 2008 new. He used it to deliver medical supplies for cancer patients and drove 8000-10,000 miles per month.

The original 2.7 engine needed a head gasket at 900,000 miles. Rather than repair that engine he bought one from a scrapyard with 100,000 miles already on it and had it installed. He proceeded to run that engine for another 700,000 miles making it 800,000 total miles on the 2nd engine before the owner died. The dealership who originally sold him the truck bought it back from his widow and have it in their showroom. The truck has 1.6 Million miles on it and still runs.
