I could swear my rear locks in 4WD High. Was that an option?

You can lock the rear diff in 2wd on a Pre-Runner. I can lock the rear diff at any time in my F150 as well as any other vehicle that I'm aware of. Toyota insists on being in 4 low which makes no sense to me.

Just curious; when would you want/need to do this. I have used my rear locker a few times but only as a last resort. You can really do damage if you use the locker in certain situations - like turning on pavement for example.

Ever see the shenanigans on a slippery boat ramp? That’s one place that comes to mind. If the vehicle has gone too far down the ramp it’s going to need all the help it can get, short of going into 4Lo. And like you said, if you’re in 4Lo with tires spinning and your front tires hit dry pavement, look out.

There are times off roading where I would use 2WD locked than 4WD.

The first gen Tacoma had a gray wire mod. That was simple enough. Now, you have to buy the add-on kit that @BabyBilly linked. The two wheel drive low module should also let you run the rear Locker in two wheel drive, but only in the 4low gear ratios.

    This and that
You might get a little pucker in the rear but no lock.

2wd locked can be good for sandy woopties like pre-running Baja, tight corners where you need to whip it around (compared to 4wd), and, obviously, doughnuts
