To all of us who are consistently maintenancing our second generation tacomas, how many miles do you have on the original engine?
I'm looking at having to replace my transmission at 260,000 mi and I'm just trying to weigh if my engine is likely to last many years or many months. Thanks

As long as regular oil changes and maintenance are performed, it will run for years. I've seen trucks on here with over 600k on the stock motor.
I only have 150k as of yesterday, and have had zero problems. My 4runner had the same motor, also no problems.
    Run it

Why does the trans need replacing?

I have 236,000 miles on my 2010 Taco, engine runs great although I am having an exhaust manifold issue likely with the gasket so it's getting a bit loud but no transmission issues.

Are you the original owner? As long as you can verify the maintenance history, I personally wouldn’t hesitate to replace the transmission on a 1GR-FE with that many miles. For extra peace of mind, you could also have an oil analysis done by Blackstone or a similar service. While it’s not the most comprehensive way to assess your engine’s condition, it’s better than nothing.

Have you checked the transmission fluid? Could be as simple as low trans fluid, the A750 is pretty bulletproof otherwise.

When was it last serviced? Is it full of the correct fluid? Has it been overheated by something like hard towing?

I would drop the pan, clean or replace the ATF filter, and clean the magnets and pan. Look for metallic shavings. Black gunk on the magnets will be normal, if not excessive, although if this has never been done, your magnets will have more gunk than normal. Metallic shavings will not be ok. Either way, complete a drain/refill and see if slipping persists.

my 06 head gasket blew at 220k-ish miles, replaced the engine because it was the best solution for me.

Getting 300,000-400,000 miles on both the engines and transmissions is pretty common. And 500,000 isn't unheard of. My 2007 is at 244,000 and both the engine and transmission still run like new. I changed the oil every 10,000 miles for the 1st 200,000 miles but in the last several years it's been a 3rd vehicle getting only 10,000-15,000 miles/year. Since then, I just change it every 6 months regardless of miles. Works out to 5000-7000. I've never needed to add oil between oil changes.

As long as you don't let the transmission fluid overheat it won't give any issues. Most problems are electrical rather than fluid related. I've had mice chew insulation off wires under the hood that shorted and caused transmission problems. The car was throwing codes that indicated the transmission needed to be rebuilt. I was quoted $2000 but a Tacoma might be a little more. I took the car in to get it rebuilt and before pulling the transmission found the wire. They shrink wrapped it and charged me 1/2 hour labor, $50 and that fixed the problem.

No we bought it 5 years ago and it already had over 150,000 mi on it. I've been told from a few sources that you shouldn't change the fluid after about 100,000 Miles

I spent a little too much.. I think $3k for the engine and $750 for the headers to make the 2015 engine work in the 2006

engine only had 3k miles so I was willing to spend more but I think older engines could be sub 2k and not need headers

Toyota wanted 4k to fix the head gasket but I heard mixed things about if it would last after the year warranty
