Has anyone traded their 3rd gen for a 4th hybrid?

Dude, this is Tacomaworld. I know you are new here, but this is not like any other car enthusiast forum!

when I first signed up over 10 years ago, I also noticed all the 'bashing' and 'negativity'.. then it hit me. People here are pretty enthusiastic about Tacomas and all the gripes and nit pick actually makes the next generation a far better product!

Remember when we all complained about the 6AT, the rattling fender liners, lack of heated wheel, low power from the 3.5, needle bearing, etc.... All addressed in the 4th gen!

I feel like it's one of those, we criticize the most of the things we are passionate about here.

Also to add, TW has some of the most sarcastic folks. Don't take anything seriously. One great resource here is you can literally post a picture of a single random bolt from a Tacoma--from any generation, and chances are there is someone can not only identify exactly where it belongs, but torque specs.. etc. :)

I test drove a trd off road hybrid with cloth seats and I’d say it’s comfortable and seems durable from the brief 15 min drive. Although I could never get a car with cloth seats. I also hate that the Tacoma premium comes with synthetic leather too. But I’m hoping it will hold up better than cloth in terms of dirt.

I feel like some other car enthusiast groups also like to bash though.

Both examples I said earlier on this thread, but take a look at the diehard N/A folks when BMW decides to turbocharge their M cars. Heck, even with the release of the E9X M3, the last N/A M3, there was some backlash from the E46 M3 folks.

Or when Mitsubishi released the Lancer Evolution X, it received plenty of backlash from the Lancer Evolution 8/9 enthusiasts.

Yea it’s all the same in every single car forums.
There is always someone who for whatever reasons can’t get the latest and the greatest and they are jaded. So to make themselves feel better they point out all the flaws of the new vehicles.

Yeah, I've been in both sides of the spectrum. I own a Mitsubishi Evo 8 which is one of the golden children amongst Evo enthusiasts (although not as golden as the VI TME and IX), and I also own a 3rd gen Tacoma, which received plenty of backlash from the 1st and 2nd gen folks (but I see the 3rd genners bashing the 4th gen, as seen on this forum and other various groups). In reality, every single vehicle has it's own faults, so you pick and choose what you can live with and just enjoy it.

The Tacoma does have a larger base for sure, but my point is, I still hear plenty of noise in the other enthusiast forums.

No worries about the S2K. After almost a decade of ownership and memories, it did its job protecting me on the crash.

It is a phenomenal car though and I do see myself owning another one in the future as long as they don't get too expensive.

Mine is quite the opposite. Had 168k miles, but been on plenty of road trips and track days.

Do miss the days when s2ki was more active. I still pop on there to see what’s up

yeah i'm still on s2ki! old car forums rule. so much archived info.

I hope you get back into another one, I truly think it's one of the best drivers cars ever made. I have a lot of other cars, but the s2k is not like anything else.

I like to modify all my cars, but trying to keep this one as stock as possible! all i've done is Ohlins coilovers, stoptech brakes, ss lines, and i've kept the stock intake/exhaust.

Except many of us can get it and decide we don’t want it for whatever reason. As I told you before most of the enthusiasts here have a bias towards whatever gen, just like the guy who told you he’d never drive a 3rd gen loved his 2nd gen now has a 4th gen. There’s a reason you see guys continuing to sink thousands of dollars into older gen trucks when they easily could put that towards what you refer to as the latest and greatest. Again enthusiasts don’t follow that trend maybe the white suv Tahoe mom who has to have the new dash but not really Tacoma people.

I’m one of those dudes too. (Still unsure about the new Tundra, but the new Tacoma is a great looking truck. It lost some of the rough edges I loved in my 3rd Gen, but it’s objectively a better vehicle overall.)

I do miss S2000s. I did some of the common mods with these cars: Volk Racing CE28 wheels on a 255 square setup, sway bars, Ohlins, brake pads and ss lines, and a Greddy exhaust to hear that VTEC scream. Also had an authentic Mugen hardtop I put on at times.

I drove some more expensive, faster cars and yet the S2000 is still one of my favorite driving experiences. Nothing like having such a slick feeling, short throw manual gearbox with a rev-happy engine (pretty much why I'm used to revving the Tacoma's 3.5 engine out), and go-kart like handling dynamics.

For those with the hybrid that responded in this thread, can you post photos of the rear cabin under/ behind the seats?

There are lots of Youtube videos when the Trailhunter and Pro came out. Under the seat you can barely fit a couple of small potato chip bags in couple of open spaces. Behind the seats, my toolroll does NOT fit. Breaker bar does and some rain jackets. Is there anything specifically you were considering?

I don’t own one but I test drove one recently. There’s nothing really to take a picture of, the back seat bottom is bolted down. Under there is the hybrid and the 12 volt battery and it takes up the whole under back seat.

behind the driver side seatback in the back is the sub for the JBL, on the pax side is a VERY small storage area where the jack and tool kit lives, you can maybe fit a backpack, that’s about it

Yea, but most people have the entire rear seat to store stuff because let’s face it, nobody ever sits there.

Thanks. I’ll take a look. Normally I have ratchet straps, jumper cables and trailer ball/ tongue stored there when not in use. So I’m trying to see what I’ll end up with for storage space with the hybrid powertrain.

I think you can get the ratchet straps and jumper cables in. Trailer ball tongue will be some wrastlin' if you can even.

Oh I agree…that’s why a hybrid is what I was looking into. My daughter’s car seat stays in the seat behind me, she’s our only one and is comfortable in the back of my 19. If my wife is along too in the truck she sits in the front seat and we’re all fine. Never really stored much in that area in the 3rd gen anyway
