But I definitely have every intention of keeping it as much of a simple looking stool as possible.

    No ring gears, chains, etc.

Something that looks and feels like a comfy stool I made myself.

Doesn't mean no one else can use the ideas suggested!

i would suggest one of these first. easier to tack some stuff together to make a semi-temporary stand for it, but lots of other metal working uses

Since most of the details of my stool are posted here, thought I'd post up the latest.

Cut the round metal top mount, which will have the leadscrew and nut welded to the bottom side.

    20250319_134527.jpg

It will also act as the template for drilling the holes needed for the t-nuts used in the wood mount. USPS is lagging that one as it still hasn't arrived.

    I'm going to use M8 t-nuts over the commonly used 1/4 - 20.

    20250319_115336.jpg

Also cut out a mock-up backrest mount just to get an idea for the setup.

    20250319_185632.jpg

Thinking of saying fuck it and using the Vyper style backrest. Mainly to keep with a clean look versus using a two-arm setup with center bracing.

    Screenshot 2025-03-19 190721.png

Thing is, I'm undecided with what gauge material to use as 3/16" would be overkill adding a ton of extra weight as well as getting expensive.

Here's how she sits now just mocked up (leadscrew nuts still need to be grinded down and welded within the tube).

Little revision of the backrest, and it's cut.

    Another productive day!

Welded up the backrest for the stool, and laid out all the parts. I just wish I had a lathe, or knew someone near me that does, to turn down two of the nuts for the leadscrew.

    20250323_142058.jpg

Cut another set of legs and mount for a stool.

Naw I'm not making a second one, a member of another forum wanted to make his own with my parts.

    20250323_142025.jpg

And lastly I cut, bent, and welded up some stiffeners.

Can't you put the nuts on a bolt, chuck the bolt and nuts into your drill, then use your angle grinder to shave down the nuts to the diameter that you need?

It's 2' long, 1" diameter, and will be a huge weight hanging awkwardly from my drill press.

It'll be easier to put on the vise and flatten each corner before rounding the edges. It'll just be super dirty (metal dust) which I hate hence why I never grind anything

I really need a lathe, even with a full mask respirator this sucked. Least it's welded on

    20250324_162148.jpg

It is the tiniest bit offset, but it's not canted at all.

No welding today, but I got to pick up the cushion!

    20250325_153525.jpg

    Fucker came out MINT.

I had made this backrest without the stool bottom on hand, so I was glad it worked out perfectly.

    20250325_155640.jpg

Camera angle makes it look a little off, but it only has a slight lean to it (on purpose). The space between will be filled nicely with the backrest cushion I've got coming.

With the cushion in hand, I moved forward with welding up the top round mount to the leadscrew followed by the nut.

    20250326_121755.jpg

I kept going back and forth about welding in the top nut inside the tube, and finally decided against it.

Don't want to risk the nuts fighting each other when adjusting the stool height. The top nut will act as a lock nut.

    20250326_120741.jpg

Once it completely cooled, did a mock install. Ignore the round footrest, that's for aesthetic purposes.

    20250326_140047.jpg

Measurements were right on the money as the seat height with the leadscrew bottomed out puts me at 29" sit height.

    20250326_140146.jpg

    I'll be cutting between 6 - 7" off for a seat height range of 22.5" to 29".

I know I've seen several of you gents building trailers in here. Does anyone have advice for a 1st time trailer build?

I'm looking to make a raft trailer with a motorcycle mount on the front.

    Couple questions:
Axle rating. Guessing the whole trailer with raft and dirt bike won't be much over 1,000lbs, but wondering if I should go for a 3,500lb axle for durability. Especially being it will see a lot of dirt roads.
Suspension - is it worth it doing anything besides leaf springs? Was eying the timbren silent ride, but seems like serious overkill.
Material - what's works? Thinking 1/8" rec tubing for the tongue, and like 14ga for the rest. :notsure:
Tongue length and axle placement considerations?

    Ive built around 200 trailers.

    Your construction list sounds right.

We just need to figure out the axle placement.

Will there be a time that only the bike or only the raft will be hauled?

    This question needs answered 1st.

There might be times I haul only the raft, which isn't very heavy, but never only the bike.

I want to put the 250lb bike just in front of the raft.

This is the best commercially available one I've seen, but I'm not about to drop $4,500 on one when I own a welder. :D

Ive always gone overkill on axles. It's nice knowing they'll never wear out, and i like to put matching hubs/wheels/tires on the trailer as the truck. not for aesthetics, but because you'll never have a shortage of spare tires should something really go wrong. big tires will also run a ton smoother on dirt roads than a standard trailer size.

No welding today either, but I learned a shop nearby that I used to get scrap from can roll some tube for me so hopefully it gets done tomorrow or Monday.

Instead, I pulled the backrest (since it's done) and tried out that VHT paint I got.

Naturally, you want to do light coats. Not this stuff, it specifies 3 heavy coats, 5 minutes in between, in different patterns.

    20250327_122643.jpg

After a good 10 minutes or so with the heatgun, the wrinkles really start to come out.

    20250327_125123.jpg

Left town for a few hours and when I got back, the paint was dry enough to lightly handle so I tackled the other side

You mean create a thread I'll derail myself?

I'll wait to see how this bill plays out that'll create a smog exemption for it.
