Hello, brand new to the forum. A few weeks ago I purchased a 2001 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner 3.4 that did not run.

I was told it had recent work done by a shop and was running for a few months before it would not start. Work included new radiator, belts, timing belt, water pump. And he believed the fuel pump went out.

I had it towed to my house and I changed the fuel pump. Still no start.

I inspected the new coil packs on the passenger side and noticed they were loose and/or missing the screws securing them. Still did not start. Checked the spark plugs and noticed fouling and they freaked of gas.

checked the spark plugs and replaced with denso plugs and let the engine dry out for a day. Replaced with correct spark plugs and still not getting it to start.

First project car and am looking for suggestions on what to try next. IMG_3183.jpg IMG_2364.jpg IMG_3183.jpg IMG_2364.jpg

3 main components needed if every sensor is functioning as should: air, fuel, and spark

did you check for spark? check the ALT120 amp fuse?

I check for spark by taking the spark plug out and connecting it to the coil pack and ground to the engine.

also unplugged a fuel line to the engine and turned over the engine to check fuel is reaching the engine.

I check both efi fuses. I will check the alt120 when I get home. Thanks for the reply

Just turning over engine does not check the open relay....

on a bad crank sensor or a bad open relay you'll only get fuel while key is cranking
as soon as you release the key.....pump dies

you can always hot wire around that if your savvy enough

its just a ground provided by ecm to the open relay circuit

A bad or severed ground connection to the ecm would also cause this
as also with the crank sensor wire lead......the lead deteriorates faster than the actual sensor

    Nice truck, VERY nice truck.

Start with the basics... do a compression test first to rule out the mechanical then proceede down the rabbit hole. Spark is easyt to check for, pull a plug, ground it and see it there is spark. If there is no spark I would look by the DIAGNOSE plug on the upper intake manifold. You will see 6 brown wires, these are THE ground wires for the ECM. Wiggle them and give them individually a little tug. These have a tendency to break internally because techs continuially bump into them and bend the wire. If she passes these tests and still does not start then check every fuse, even the ones in the cab by your knee.
