Some lovely person in my apartment complex decided to cut my battery terminals last night. Unfortunately, I am terrible with electrical work and need some help even figuring out where to start. If I have to replace the cables how for back will I need to rewire, and are there any diagrams that would help out?

Oh my friend, I suspect the perp was not a Tacoma hater, but had it out for the Tacoma driver.

So was the cab broken into to get to the hood release?

Truly sorry for your troubles. Would your insurance provide for professional help?

Dang. How did they get under the hood? Were there cameras?

Fortunately the battery harness isn't a complete nightmare to R/R. I do agree with above. It might be easier to send it through insurance, with a criminal complaint also filed.

Just to get rolling again, you can use some large butt splice crimps.. I don't know what gauge the stock wire is off hand... 6 gauge? no idea... Maybe something like this kit? upload_2025-3-17_11-36-24.png

obviously, disconnect the wires from the battery while you work on them...

    Thats my first guess...
Alarm going off all night & after weeks with no consideration for others, enough is enough...

NOBODY is just going to intentionally cut wires cuz theyre a "toyota hater"....:frusty:

    You got F'd hard there....
To do it right, both cables should be replaced with factory replacements...
Not the splices that were suggested....

"right" I agree, replace the cables.. But sometimes you just gotta do it quick and dirty to get it rolling. You could slam those connectors on there and drive it to a shop for a pro repair. :notsure:

If someone was willing to go to that extent, they'd probably do it again as well... I'd hate to buy new cables only to have the same thing happen to the new ones.

Considering they gained access to the engine bay, they also could have just as easily disconnected the battery rather than cut the wires... pretty malicious.

Perhaps they were planning to steal the battery and were interrupted (or realized the terminals were on the wrong side for their car).

The repair is pretty strait forward. Each wire cut needs to be spliced back together and the well crimped connection needs to be covered with sealant lined heat shrink tubing. You would need a proper crimper so it may be better to let a shop handle it.

I do recommend you file a police report. I'm not sure I would contact the insurance company. Any claims tend to raise future rates and this isn't really a big problem.

I had just got back from a weekend road trip and left the truck unlocked to continue unpacking. The only plus is nothing was stolen. The only thing I can think of is that I'm in someone's unassigned spot :annoyed:

It was only left unattended for maybe 40 minutes.

Theres no alarm but Im going to get one now. plus a dash cam...

Thankfully that charging harness is easy to replace and non-OEM options are a mildly priced upgrade even
