    Hi Folks,
I need to tow an '05 Corolla and I'm hoping to rent out a U-hual dolly and do it w/ my Tacoma (V6). The journey is about 1.5 hours. To be honest I'm a little anxious about the prospect having only towed things with it of very little weight like dirt bikes, building materials etc. Anyone have any experience they can share on what to expect performance wise any issues I might run into etc.. or if it's just a bad idea overall? From what I can tell the Corolla should be about 2700 lbs / max tow weight on receiver says 5000 lbs / 500 lbs tongue.

I could have access to a Tundra to do it but I don't want to put out my friend who is giving me the corolla for free as it is.

    Thanks,

I dollied a Prius about 130 miles / 2 hours with my 2000 2.7 4 cylinder. No problem, just go easy.

Should be fine to tow that corolla just make sure to take it easy. If you have an automatic make sure that you turn off overdrive.

It’s fine until it’s not. I wouldn’t trust mine to emergency stop with that kind of weight on the interstate. If it were me, and I knew I could borow the bigger truck I would go that route. Throw your buddy a couple bucks and some beer for the truck time.

I towed a 19’ Boston Whaler (2200 #) from Annapolis to US / Canada border. She made the trip no problem. Go easy and don’t check MPG!!! These are not long haul trucks.

How about renting a UHaul pickup truck as the tow vehicle? Then you could either go with a dolly or a full trailer which has the benefit of trailer brakes. Save the wear on your truck.

Great idea. Just wonder why I got a truck if I don’t do truck things with it??? LOL

Excellent points here. If I had the option of a bigger truck, I would go that route myself.

I towed a similar sized vehicle with my 3.4l Taco 400+ miles, It can do it but make sure to keep the over drive off. Also make sure you keep a good following distance because 1st gen OEM brakes are insufficient for this task.

If the U-Haul dolly has brakes and your truck has the towing lights receptacle; go for it, if not NO.

I do suspect the U-Haul has the brake actuator. They like to be safe like that.

I get better mileage in my f-250 hauling my Tacoma than I do just driving the Tacoma itself.

All running and driving, mostly stock, all in various states of rust rehab from Michigan winters

This made it ~400 miles at 75mph and A/C with little issue and got 10-12 mpg. Not the same as a Corolla, but they do pretty good towing.

Make sure to get a tow dolly that has the best looking tires! When I recently towed my daughter’s RAV4, I wished I would have looked closer. Also, plan on a couple of extra gas stops.

What I ended up doing was getting a AAA membership and got it towed 60 miles to my house for the price of a $125 membership :p
I was up front about what I wanted to do from the get go and everyone was fine: the guy who sold me the membership, the dispatcher, until the tow guy showed up...he hemmed and haw'd a little but ultimately he did the tow. I wasn't too keen on using the dolly down I-10 through downtown Phoenix when rush hour starts at 1pm. It all turned out good in the end though.

Great idea. I’m glad you got it done safely and with a good deal. AAA might come in pretty handy with one of these old trucks!
