I’d figure out what resolution and framerate you’re targeting with your current GPU for whatever games you’re interested in, then go from there.

1440p @ 144FPS is the sweet spot for my setup, happy enough with a cheaper 27” LG VRR monitor that matches those specs (27GL83A-B).

rtings.com does great monitor reviews, good place to start

I have an LG ultragear. The 2nd I've owned, both have been flawless.

love this thing. Lotta pixels though. My PC struggles on some newer games since I’m running my build from 2016 with only swapped SSD and Graphics card to an average 6700 XT

wish the stand was a little smaller since my desk space is limited for now, but wanted ability to have dual monitor productivity but simpler setup

Been running 1440P for a good 6-7 years.

The Samsung G7 Odyssey is my main monitor and I've got an HP Omen in the closet that I yank out when I need to play with my other computers.

Both stupid fast and great for FPS.

My friend plays 4k. I couldn’t tell the difference between it and 1440. Granted even with contacts then vision wasn’t stellar. After lasik I’m better than 20/20 now. Does this mean I need 4k?

Since we're steering towards gaming, have you seen the latest Steam survey?

    Screenshot 2025-03-18 185530.png

And yes I'm aware a large number of those are bots/farmers/etc but still, 1080P is still very common out there!

Not that I'd run it

I think there’s not that many games where it really makes a difference. Even stuff like Overwatch. 1080 maxed settings vs 1440 mid/high settings do you really notice?

Eh, I don't play Overwatch but the games I do play yes I noticed a huge difference from 1080P to 1440P. I should check tonight when I play 'High on Life' as there are a ton of games I never launched in 1080P (since I don't use that resolution).

But I notice less of a difference from 1440P to native 4K and I watch shows/movies on a 4K OLED all the time if that matters.

I love that Chinese is the largest language when the global version of Steam is still effectively banned. To me, that means 50% of Steam users are remote bots farming skins in CS:GO.

The ideal resolution all depends on the physical size of the screen (ie pixel density) and also how close you sit to it.

For how close I sit to my 27” 1440p is plenty dense, but if I stepped up in monitor size I would start to want 4K.

Don't think I've ever really thought of it in this way, but makes a whole lot sense. Definitely will be keeping this in mind when (IF) I ever get around to building out a more dedicated sim rig. I had thought 1080 may be better on the budget for going triple screen, but I can see why so many choose to go 1440 instead.

2K is just an awesome price sweet spot still. 1080P doesn't save much. Most monitors at 1080P now focus on having crazy high refresh rates for competitive esports (I think they're up to 960 hz now, which is well beyond what our eyes can detect) or have a very low price, like Asus makes a few panels that sell for under $100 on sale at 75 hz with Freesync. Bestbuy and the like love carrying those cheap gaming moniptors since they sell like crazy to students. However, for $200, you can easily find 1440P 120 hz Freesync monitors, especially if youre willing to go off brand.

Depends on the game. Stuff with good graphics like Cyberpunk or Starfield deserve to be cranked up if you got the hardware. Fast paced FPS or competitive stuff I don't really ever go over 1440 just because of the feel alone. I'll take whatever will do at least 144hz, basically trying to minimize eye-raep here. Playing games on the TV I set them to the native 4k 120hz because its optimized for that and generally looks the best.

Speaking of the Htpc build, it wouldn't freakin post with the 5070ti. Tried all the tricks nada, something wacky with that boards pcie compatibility. Got fed up and Amazoned same dayd an Asus 550 board and a Ryzen 7 for dirty cheap, problem solved. I had to 3d print some adapters for the waterblock and figure out docp for a lil OC but shes coochin now. Threw that Intel trash in the street, we're all AMD round hur now.

Yeah, it's still crazy how far Intel has fallen and how AMD has stepped into the leadership role. For me, the recent defining moment was when AMD worked with Microsoft to revise, again, how the OS handles core loading on chiplet designs and AMD actually gave Intel chips a bigger jump in performance with that work than Intel got from their own driver and software revisions. It's a terrible look when your competitor can make your own hardware that much better with the work they are putting in.

I've narrowed it down to Logitech's G502 X Lightspeed or Razor's Basilisk V3 Pro 35k for the mouse. I can't make up my mind on the keyboard. Keychron looks nice, but which one? I don't need a full-size keyboard and I would prefer something low profile.

Maybe the Lemokey P1 HE? It's not low profile though.

I bought a keychron q1 a while back. Its pretty decent for the price. I'm not really into the force break style but, it's a hefty aluminum case (which I typically like). I can't speak for the stock switches, i swapped those out and caps but i cant speak for their low profile stuff.

I'd go Logi. Both of those mice have the odd early failure, and Logitechs RMA process is completely painless where Razors will make you ask for lube.

Keychron is great. It's hard to go wrong, honestly. I have a low profile version I bring when traveling. I'll have to look which model it is.

Been a victim of ghost-clicking on 3 Logitech mice, won't ever recommend them.

Well, they all seem to come across the ocean on a boat. They're probably made in the same factory.
