Hi all, I just got a 2011 Tacoma with 120k on it. The maintenance light is always on and I’ve tried to reset it the way it says in the manual, and it’s not resetting. It’s solid and not flashing so it’s been on for a while I’m guessing. Is this a common problem for these trucks? Is the only way to fix it replacing the cluster? It’s not a big problem, I just hate to see it. Thank you for any help. Let me know if more information is needed

When you try resetting it are you seeing the decreasing number of blinking dashes on the odometer?

Without looking I try it 2 different ways.

Set to Odo, key off, then hold reset on the cluster, then key on for 5-10 seconds.

Otherwise Trip A, key off, hold reset, key on 5-10.

I have tried both of these ways. I don’t get the count down on the odo nor the zeros.

I always pull what little hair I have left out trying to remember EXACTLY what I did the last time. And that goes for both my rides that have resets. The old ride, mark the miles down and go.

From page 403 in the 2014 Owner's Manual:

-When the engine is running switch the display to Trip Meter A.
-Turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
-While pressing the ODO/TRIP button, turn the engine switch to the ON position:
-Continue to press and hold the button until the odometer displays "000000"
-If the display fails to reset, the light will continue flashing.

Note: The above is directly from the owner's manual however
there is no hint or mention of the rolling count-down/re-set thing it does
while holding the button down. Go figure.

I just checked it again for Typos and it looks good. FWIW, I almost never get it to work on the first attempt. Maybe a timing issue if too much time goes by between the steps? Dunno. But the dealer almost never resets the light on my truck when I have them do an oil change. Probably aggravates them too and time is money.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Don't start the truck...turn the key on while holding the reset switch.

    Isn’t the process for a 2.0 gen (2005-2011) different than the 2.5 gen (2012-2015)?
OP you’re checking the manual for a 2011 or earlier, right? Cause what people have been posting are what I do for my 2015.

I got tired of repeatedly having to turn the maintenance light off so I just leave it on. I know it means nothing to me. Part of happiness is not sweating the small stuff

The year it changed from Odometer to Trip Meter 1 was 2011. The difference being the RED Cluster Gauge or the WHITE Cluster Gauge.
IF you have the Combination meter with a Red color use the Odometer to reset.
IF you have the Combination meter with a White color use the Trip Meter 1 to reset.

If neither of these work you have an issue.

Makes sense: Right around the time of the 2nd Gen refresh.

pretty sure I have an issue lol. I resetting both ways. In my factory owners manual that’s from 2011, it says to set it to the odometer. It still doesn’t reset. I’ve tried to reset it with the trips too and it doesn’t work. I’ve tried it key in the run position both with engine on and off. What could be the cause?

I should also add. There was an aftermarket remote start kit added. Is it possible this may be causing problems like the installer messing up the wiring or something?

is it possible I would be able to reset it with my obd scanner?

I would guess something in the combination meter, BUT that is only a guess based on the fact that the lamp is based purely on mileage and all the controls for it is in the combination meter. Plus looking at the print for the combination meter it appears that the idiot lamp for the maintenance required is controlled completely by the logic in the combination meter.

I highly doubt that the remote start would have anything to do with the Maintenance Light.

If you take some electrical tape and cut it in a 15MM x 15MM square, it should perfectly block it.
Out of sight out of mind:crapstorm:
    Seriously though…
