It's less Tacoma and more mod
It'll drop in physically but you need to use the head from the one with the dizzy since the removed that hole on the later models. Plus you'll have to use all the electronics from the broken engine as well since that is what your truck is setup to run. Pretty much all the later model sensors will work but the TPS, IAC, and all the ignition stuff needs to be from the original engine.

It fit in like the original engine and also had the hole for the distributor the only thing is the motor has the camshaft sensor on the head and my wiring harness does not but i was told it’s not a problem since distributor does the job for that sensor in replacement. It is a crank but no start problem and ofcourse i am using everything from my ecu wiring harness etc from the old motor

I was thinking maybe someone here did a similar swap and how it worked for them. I replaced the distributor igniter spark plugs map sensor and also the fuel regulator but have no results yet. It only cranks and feels like it wants to turn on but does not end up doing so

Was working on it this afternoon i finally made it start after reviewing every possible reason to not start it ended up being the pcv valve failing i had a crank but no start problem and made sure i had spark i had gas and everything in my ignition was working until i disconnected the holes that goes from the intake manifold to the pcv valve and it had oil residue i left it off and turned my key it started right up!!

Now to confirm my truck originally is a 1996 toyota tacoma with a 2.4l 2rz engine that runs with distributor i got a 2001 engine same 2rz only that this one was spark on coil and had a cam shaft sensor on head i was doubt full in doing the swap but i took the risk and yes it worked perfectly good i used the 2001 motor and distributor went right on used my original wiring harness and it fired right up after discovering my pcv valve was faulty. Keep in mind my wiring only uses crank shaft position sensor and the distributor does the work for the not connected camshaft sensor on head.
