    I don't recommend this.

I am pretty sure this is not the case. Get off of the forum and call your agent now. You should get better service and less jerking around dealing with your own insurance. They will then go after the at-fault drivers insurance in a process called subrogation to recoup what they paid, so in the end your insurance will pay little to nothing but have taken care of their paying customer (you).

There are several useful videos on this channel. He's the owner of a well respected body shop here in Denver that I've dealt with twice for the RAV4. The first one was a total loss. The second one had a deer jump into the front headlight.

Also, if either insurance company asks to direct deposit, DO NOT TAKE IT. Do not set it up. Once they send that first payment, it's much harder to deal with all the back and forth during the supplement process (for example, they didn't fix the tail light in the initial estimate, so you'd have to go through a "supplemental" estimate to fix that).

Likely the at-fault insurance will propose the initial estimate as missing a BUNCH of stuff (like conveniently forgetting that you have airbags that need to be removed and reinstalled (labeled as R&I on the estimate)). If you just say "ok, start the work" then they will pay the lowest cost body shop to do the minimum possible.

Sorry for all the bullshit you're going to be going through, but it's gonna suck some days.

You can also file a complaint against the agent who told you that "you can't switch back" once the claim has started.
