Was this the wrong oil filter?

The pic below shows the filter I took out (obviously the dirty one) and the new one that matched the part number for a 2019 Taco 6-cylinder 4x4. The one I took out came from Jiffy Lube (didn't have time to do my own) and I am wondering - did they just use the wrong filter or is that an acceptable alternative filter?

It is about 3/8th inch shorter than the correct one but does that matter? It had the same/correct diameter to wrap around the oil tube (? Not sure what that is called inside the filter housing) and covered all of the return holes.

    Comments? Thanks.

Some filters from different companies are considerably smaller than OEM filters.

Well, something certainly is off! If you want to be 100% sure everything is kosher, then buy the OEM filter versus that microgard thing. They sell them at Walmart so it's not hard to find the correct one.

My 2013 4Runner 4.0 oil filter looks like the one on the left while the one on the right looks like the correct length for the Gen 3 V6…but that is just judging from your pic

I measured a new one from Toyota i have on hand. it is 2 5/8 inches! Looking at it it seems a bit shorter that what i have been using! Now you got me wondering! What is the measurement of your new one and old one?
    Thanks

Old one (from Jiffy Lube) is 2 1/8th high, new one from AutoZone is 2 1/2 (maybe 2 5/8ths) - it is in the truck and did not directly measure it and fit just fine. Also a video on the filters showed the filter body extending above the filter housing similar to the new filter.

So your Auto Zone one is the same as mine. Good to know in both our cases!

In case this helps: I bought two Toyota oil filters at the dealership, one for the 2010 RAV4 V6, and the second for a 2023 Tacoma TRD. I was surprised when the parts store person handed me two identical filters Part Number 04152-YZZA1. I already know that this part number is the one used for the 2010 RAV V6, so I asked him to doublecheck to make sure it was the correct one for the 2023 Tacoma.

So if I measure these filters (04152-YZZA1) the size corresponds to the one for your Tacoma, or about 2-5/8" from top to bottom, and about 2-1/2" across the top (wide). The Toyota filters are so cheap, under $8.00 that I never buy substitutes. Please be cautious about the fake OM Toyota filters sold at online stores. I just searched the part number I wrote above, and it led me to a $46.00 filter somewhere online :)

One thing for certain is as follows: when you press the correct filter over the perforated aluminum tube in the middle of the housing, the top edge of the tube inside the cartridge should be just a tad (maybe 1/16") lower than the top of the cartridge. When installed properly, there should not be metal to metal contact between the aluminum tube and the engine, just between the hard plastic area (or seal?) at the top center of the cartridge and the metallic engine.

I'd take that filter back to Jiffy Lube and complain... It's pretty likely that you've had very little or no filtration with the short filter. If I remeber right the holes on the perforated center tube extend nearly to the bottom. If so, the cartridge could easily slide up and completely bypass.

I wouldn't waste my time. They wouldn't give his money back because nobody can prove that's theirs. The most they would do is to give you the credit, but I wouldn't let them touch mine ever again even if that's free, Nope.

Could at least make sure it's not a error on their end. Might be able to save them from continuing to install them on other vehicles.

I wouldn’t let a quick oil change place oil the chain on my bicycle. Just go buy OEM filters. I get mine from the dealer when I’m near one. Usually buy 3 or 4 at a time. Hell the dealer close to me sells them for $5.95.
