Rack & Pinion Port

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to get help in determining which hose goes to the two ports on the Rack and Pinion. Please see image. Truck is a 2000 Tacoma v6 3.4l 4wd.

So, the thing is I got a new rack and pinion installed but I fluid is still leaking. And I suspect it's leaking from those port. It could be crossed threading. But wanted to make sure the mechanic guy connect the hose to the correct port.

I also want to know if it's okay to wrap the hose with Teflon tape.

Those are a double flare fitting....tape wont do nothing....the seal is on the nipple



ultimately if you cant get to seal ......you can use seal savers

 

Both of the lines have orings at the base of the fitting. Make sure there both there and new.

 

Which is the Return and pressure port?

 

THere's no orings.....these are flare fittings just like brake lines....and HVAC

O-ring would not stand up to 1500psi +

its not a scuba fitting


you have to be careful and squarely seat that tube perfect at 90 degrees

or it'll be crooked when you wench down the bushing....
if mar that end....you'd have to cut a little off and reflair
...which is not easy on 20yr metal

Lower inside appears to be HP

 

If at first you get a leak....dont over torque it

instead...try to loosen and reseat that tube

you dont want to over squash that double flare



These really come in handy for flare lines in bad places

Here's a post on someone else talking about the orings. You are correct the 1st gens do not call for an oring from the factory. Alot the the aftermarket lines and racks supply orings though. 2nd and 3rd gen lines do come with an oring from the factory with the same type of fitting. Might be worth a try if the line is leaking.

Return line is the one without the crimped line and that has the constant tension clamps holding the hose onto the sections of hardline. Make sure it’s not leaking from the return line at the clamp closest to the rack. It drips down and can look like it’s dripping from something else.

Did the shop give you a warranty on the parts and their work? I’d be talking to them if it was done recently even if there wasn’t a warranty.

 

You know hydraulic hoses delaminate after time, pressure, heat, swelling
all hidden from view.....

considering how much a new rack is......most of you dont seem to understand

to me a new rack would necessitate new hoses too....especially HP one


kinda like ignoring high blood pressure.....hidden accumulating damage

 

In my case it was the low pressure line that failed - it's easily rebuildable by getting some power steering hose and cutting lengths to fit with the sections of hardline.

Any generic 3/8" steering hose will work to replace these two sections. It's usually about $20 a foot at a parts house and I bought 3' of Gates hose for $30 on Amazon. You only need about 2 feet roughly. The oem tube nut will be higher quality than the modern aftermarket stuff.

 

For extra $20 I'd just buy the complete unit.....

one and done......its a PIA to get that hose out of there.....might as well be 4 certain


if you already had hose on hand, that maybe a different deal

and you'd end up with a brandnew double flare....instead of some 25yr old that may already have some damage.....

 

Could depend on where you live - all of my fittings look brand new in Southern California. Snaking the old hose out it’s basically as much work as you can just pull the hose off the hard line to get it out more easily. I don’t like overspending when I’m working on these things.

 

I've also had problems with damage threads on old double flare bushing(s)...

its real easy to strip the receiver if not careful......in this case, the rack itself


mine was on a fuel line......that line was over $200 w/ship......bitter lesson
its real easy to start that first thread off wrong...crooked...and keeps jumping 1st thread

I had to needle file,,,clean up the bushing threads so as not to strip the new receiver

finding crimpable/bendable tube butts would be the hardest part

Please see image below. It looks like it is leaking on the return hose(low pressure). Maybe it is not screw in properly or should I just buy a new hose for it?
