Hey folks, long time lurker here that finally encountered a obstacle that i couldn't find the answer for myself. What have any of you referenced when removing your 1gr-fe? I'm handy enough to perform plenty of in depth work but lack overall experience to figure it out without a guide like the technician service manual or equivalent to guide me for my first time. Is there a place i can download a pdf? Even if i need to pay for it that's ok. I just wanna make sure i do this correctly as I dont wanna fuck anything up. Thanks

Not much to it, unhook wiring, lines, trans, exhaust, engine mounts, etc, support the trans and pull it out.

It's one of the easiest engines I've ever had to remove, you might want to fab up some hangers or buy the Toyota ones that bolt to the heads for lifting.

Main thing is that you take care not to snag any of the wiring or lines while your lifting it out.

Haha, i genuinely appreciate your effort to help but those instructions completely skip the only part I haven't been able to figure out which is separating the bell housing/transmission from the engine itself. I've used mirrors and even a bore scope and can't find a single bolt around the entire edge of the bell housing that I missed removing. Disconnected the a/c pump, alternator, starter, and whatever the mechanism that the lower passenger side pulley is. Bell housing seems to barely separate on one side but not the other no matter what i do and I'm at the point that applying any stronger force is gonna bend something or gouge out pieces of aluminum from either side of the seam between the bell housing and engine. There's gotta be something that i missed regarding disconnecting the transmission.

EDIT: I think I know what i need to do but I still don't know where they are! Where are the 6 flex plate to torque converterbolts cause I'm certain I didn't remove these, but like I said I've looked everywhere and can't see any bolts that are seemingly holding the engine and transmission assembly together.

You have to remove the starter to access the torque converter bolts, need to remove those first before attempting to separate the engine from the transmission.

It's probably stuck on the dowl pins, sometimes it takes some heat to get them to come loose.

I cant even remember how many bolts there are on the bell housing anymore, but I recall there being one at the very top at the biggest bastard spot. I usually tilt the trans down to get them. Helps with harness as well.

I don't know what the dowel pins are exactly but I have the starter completely removed already but didn't see 6 bolts hidden by it when I did. At least none that seemed to be the source of my Issue.

I got 9 out of the bell housing Bishop. Pretty sure I got that shitty one at the top much to the dismay of my knuckles

The dowel pins are either solid pins or bushings that are a perfect fit in the holes they are in to keep the engine and transmission in alignment.
This is just a generic picture so they may be in a different spot.

Do you have a manual transmission? If so you won't have converter bolts.

Then there are torque converter bolts on the back of the flex plate, you have to bar the engine over to get them all.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the flex plate inside the Bell housing? If it is how am I supposed to access it before I'm able to separate it from the engine?

EDIT: Wait a minute. Do I actually have to look through that hole where part of the starter comes out of and remove the bolts in the flex plate through that hole. Rotating the harmonic balancer to access each of them individually?

You go through the starter opening, you have to turn the engine until each bolt lines up with the opening so you can put a socket on it.

Fucking hallelujah! Thank you so much. Of course it never even occurred to me that I would need to look in there to access the bolts and furthermore need to turn the engine to access each one individually. I was going insane trying to understand how I was supposed to get at them since the best any guide says is only "remove the starter then remove torque converter bolts". None mentioned you have to go in through that opening.

Thank You to everyone here who helped me finally realize what I was missing. You all prevented at least a few grey hairs from appearing. I don't even wanna think how long it would've taken me to figure that out without all your help. I greatly appreciate it.
