I have a coolant leak under the truck front drivers side area. I believe it to be coming from the thermostat or possibly the pipe that connects to the thermostat. Has anyone run into this before? Just wondering what I will need to replace. I am kind of leaning towards just replacing the pipe? I think the thermostat is fine it has not been overheating or anything although maybe the gaskets on it are garbage?

Appreciate your thoughts!! 2006 Tacoma 2.7L

    Thanks!!!

That is the coolant bypass pipe leaking. It is a known issue with your year and earlier. They have a newer design replacement that is made of stainless steel.

Note that the intake manifold will need to be removed in order to replace it. I'll get you the part numbers needed and post back in a minute or two.

Is that a pipe or hose connected to the thermostat? I’m used to seeing a hose there but not familiar with the 4 cyl setup. If that is a hose, the clamp may be missing. I’m concerned about that rusty stud and nut.

Sweet so is that not where the thermostat is? I seen that doorman makes the pipe does Toyota make their own as well now? As far as taking the intake manifold off is it fairly straight forward? Would it need a new gasket? Appreciate your knowledge!!!

...oh that looks like a toyota pipe in your picture

No clamp missing. That is a flange that is bonded to a pipe. It is all plastic and is known to leak for those reasons and why they updated it in later years to a stainless pipe.

I would use a Toyota Pipe. It is straight forward as long as you go slow and keep track of what you do and just reverse the process for reassembly. I would replace the thermostat and install all new gaskets for anything I remove.

Make sure they give you the correct pipe flange gasket as some have been given the incorrect gasket for the plastic pipe which is a rubber seal vice the correct flat gasket.

Took me most of yesterday to take everything apart. Rusty bolts :) Have any tips to clean up these mating surfaces without scratching them? I used a green sponge and brake clean. It kinda works but not great and time consuming.

Also is any type of gasket sealer necessary for the thermostat/bypass pipe? Assuming no sealer on the intake either just a new gasket?

A little sealer never hurts. I know of no easy way to clean sealing surfaces. Lots of elbow grease.
