The paper air filter is massive and there's no gains from a re-useable filter except that its re-usable.

I'd buy a check Wix filter and save up for the cold air you want.

Your truck is already CAI from the factory.

Any quality paper filter is just fine.

''Cold air'' filters are a misnomer, you can't get much colder then the air a stock box is pulling in. Underhood air is NOT cold.

The stock airbox pulls air from the grill I believe. That would make it a cold air intake from factory like most cars.

the only problem is it also pulls stock from the wheel air which means water and dirt can get in.

the fixes for that are cowl intake mod or snorkel. Both of which probably retain factory air box and filter. With snorkel adding a second filter if you put a Syklone pre cleaner.

KN is generally oiled. Which can mess up MAF’s.
Slightly dirty stock filters filter better than new. Slight dust helps filter.

you can replace it for cheap when you need to.
    No filter lasts forever.

I think afe has a washable one that people report does not actually filter. Costs more. You do not want dirt in your engine. Not a fan of that company either.

You’re not going to gain anything with a “cold air intake”.
    It’s a truck, not a race car.

    listen man
I have a 230hp 230tq Tacoma that sucks cold air

if I put an oiled filter to mess up my MAF sensor, it’s gonna bump me up to 1000hp/tq instantly, basically better than a Ram TRX Hellcat engine swap except for $40. You clearly don’t know cars.

OP, study your intake system and follow it from the engine and you'll see it's already as cold air as possible. The only other way is to rout it to the cab so when the AC is on it sucks cold air.

Aftermarket air box seemed a waste to me.

Replaced factory filter with an aFe dry filter and removed the secondary filter after it (which I believe was a charcoal type for fuel vapor). Very pleased with it. Been running it for way more than 100k. Blow it out every oil change. Bumped up the mpg about .5 mpg too. Also removed inner fender intake.

I'm also very happy with my aFe dry filter, that's all I have done to my intake system.
