Like the title states… AC started hissing last night and now won’t blow cold air. It does blow just won’t cool…. Mechanic said it’s the compressor. I’ve read it could also be clutch. How would I diagnose?

One can never have too many light bars.
Did the mechanic perform a full diagnostic or is that what they think just based on what you described over the phone? Seems like I would just defer to the mechanic and let them fix it.

If in doubt, get a second opinion.

If you could hear the hissing inside the cab sounds like your evaporator is leaking and now you have no refrigerant.

compressor, clutch and tensioner will need to be replaced - sorry, happened to me too. Dealership was actually cheaper than AC shop - mine was $1,600 to replace. Mine squealed like a banshee, if its making a noise, yea its bad and will need replacing

"hissing" means you were leaking refrigerant...
Should be able to locate just looking around with a flashlight...
On fords, theres green dye mixed into the refrigerant oil.....
There should be oil / dye residue where the source of the leak is..
dye actually looks like green coolant.
Look at the very front behind your grill, infant of your radiator,
your ac condenser, maybe you picked up a rock & punctured it....

Sounds. like you declined the repairs & took the truck?
Go visually look at the compressor for what im referring to & every other ac component for evidence of refrigerant loss.

Did they actually tell you what they found wrong with the compressor?
$1100 isnt a bad deal for what it is, especially if you actually lost refrigerant & they need to recharge.

Without test equipment, gauges, knowledge, its a crap shoot on your end...
    pay....
