    What would do this?
I did have issues on this side. Axle was leaking & the brake had stopped adjusting. It’s just not a tread wear I’m familiar with….

    what wear?
    the cracks?
Your tires are tired & old.....
    The edges?
Doesnt look bad for a worn tire....
Do you rotate every 5K miles?
If not, thats another issue that will result in outside edge tire wear...

ok. It’s just I’ve not seen wear that’s uneven like this. In other words, random sections of the one tread totally missing grooves? (not sure if that’s the correct terminology). & it’s only like this on that one tire, one tread. & yes. I do rotate regularly. I am surprised I have not noticed this wear before it got to this point.

They are indeed getting old. As we do it here in the northeast, if they still get you through the snow (& pass inspection, of course), you’re ok. On the other hand, knock on wood, I’ve never had a blowout & it would be dumb to ask for one….
    Thank you….

A worn out tire isnt going to wear 100% evenly at that point, I do see where the WW are missing on some of the pads,
Cant say its a issue with your suspension, just worn tires....

Some tires use various rubber compounds throughout the tire and tread pattern to suit different conditions. I would guess that the tread blocks that are showing more wear are likely made of a softer compound. I had a set of BFG Mud-Terrains at one point that showed similar wear, every other tread block on the outer edge of the tire was noticeably shorter and more worn that the rest of them. I would tend to agree with the other replies; they just look well-worn. I don't think there's anything concerning about it.

Could be tire cupping, or like others are saying just old tires. I'd put new tires on and keep an eye on them, if they look good after awhile then no need to look into it further.

Maybe somebody prior to you slammed on the brakes real hard going very fast thus stopping tire and creating a flat spot.

Do you know how old those tires are or how many miles on them.
The cracks between the treads tell me the tires are old, time to replace the tires.
Also how old/how many miles on your shocks? They may be in need of replacement too.

low tire pressure, alignment, worn suspension, tire not balanced properly, ect.

I think you're looking at a manufacturing inconsistency. An alignment or tire pressure issue would probably affect multiple adjacent blocks, not just individual random blocks around the tire.

Sipes are cut into the tire after they are molded. It might just be that those sipes weren't cut as deep as the others around them when the tire was new. I've seen a similar pattern on the tires on my Civic.

That said, I agree with everyone else--that rubber looks too old for the highway.

Tires with more aggressive treads often wear like that. Every other lug on the outside edge will wear down faster. It usually happens on the front tires and happens when you corner. More of the vehicle weight is on the outside edge of the tire and they wear faster as you corner. The more aggressive you drive the more it happens If you rotate often it slows down the process. When the worn tires get put on the rear the wear evens out. Worn shocks or under inflated tires speed up the process.

But if you let them go too long before rotating and once the pattern starts it only gets worse. Actually, those don't look too bad. I've seen a lot worse. It looks like you've gotten a lot of miles and/or time out of them. What is the date stamp? Tires over 6 years old may need to be replaced even if they have plenty of tread. Once they are 10 years old, they need to be replaced.

There is a 4 digit manufacturer date on every tire

    3312 means 33rd week in 2012

Alot of times the dot # is on the back side of the tire sidewall, not the front...
She's very aware she has a set of "may pop's"....
She already stated regardless of condition, she's running them till theyre racing slicks....:D
So doesnt change anything when they were born....
Theyre obviously a teenager from the cracking....

These are coming up on 6yrs. I do drive aggressively. City living will do that. I’m trying to move to the country. Chillax (do people even say that anymore?)

The rear shocks are around 1yr young.

Coilovers are 4yrs & that tire was front right prior to last rotation, 2,000-ish miles ago.

    Tire date 1218

Guess I better save my pennies. Just spent a bunch on the rear axle bearing & brakes. Had to buy a press….

Thank you all for your help in figuring this out & suggesting some possibilities. Although I knew tires needed to happen sooner than later, now it’s bumped to sooner than that….

Got me some new tires. I did see, especially from the earlier pics I posted, that the rubber wasn’t in the best shape. It took you all pointing out that the time was now, so thanks. Now I just have to touch up the rims….
