You can but I promise you will oblong and scar up the nut. I've done it that way and it's impossible not to. They are only aluminum and scar up easy. Those coil overs are to expensive (like 2k aren't they?) in my opinion to not spend 50 bucks on the correct tool. Especially since you can see the nut when walking past your truck.

From experience, you’d have to be doing something really wrong to mess up when reducing preload like removing the pinch bolt all the way or not having full engagement with the spanner wrench when turning or have corroded shock bodies / seized coil nuts. The obvious question when people say to remove them to adjust preload is where do you place them to be able to apply the torque necessary to change preload and then how do you know when to stop? How many times are you going to remove the coilovers while setting preload? Anyway make sure the threads are clean like anything else, get full engagement with the spanner, lube them up, and don’t do anything stupid and it’ll be alright.

You only do that with dual rate coilovers where you have a couple jam nuts to set your main spring preload. Only use a spanner or a punch that fits the hole perfectly. You do not want to egg out the holes - you’ll be having a bad day if you do.

you will fuck your coil nuts to shit if you do that.

Look at the holes your spanner wrench dowel pins fit in and look at the picture I posted. Your friend is either mistaken about what kind of coil nuts you have or a walking disaster or both.

He's just wrong about my shocks, he's a better mechanic than most people here I can bet. He's a little redneck of course but he knows his stuff. I'll buy the proper wrench and not be a cheap skate lol
