I recently bought a 2001 4x4. everything was working fairly well for 250K. Until I was on highway going 70 MPH and then needed to slow down. The car began to shake severely. It was as though I was going over multiple bumps in the road. I had to pull off of the highway. Then when I started it again the wobble/shudder/shake went away. anyone have any thoughts? Mechanic wants to replace U joints/bearings AND rear differential..

It's could be a combination of some of these older parts maybe; shocks, tires, LBJ, UBJ, tie rod ends, sway bar end links, sway bar bushings or upper/lower control arm bushings. If you have original parts they all could use a refresh I am sure. I daily drive one with 270k things got progressively smoother as I replaced those items over time. They are all finite and wearable parts. Oh and like homeboy said grease your zerks all of them. If you have new parts and pieces already disregard this post. Thanks and have a nice day.

I had a 2000 4Runner that did that while slowing down and coming to a stop, and it ended up being the Torque Converter, but do as stated if not already done above first..

------------------------------EDIT---MAYBE HAVE THAT TRANS CHECKED OUT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING-------------------------------

I had a similar experience 10 years ago. If I took my foot off the gas pedal while going 75+ mph I would get a horrible shudder. When I stopped, I walked around the truck and felt the rims. It turned out to be one of the rear rims was too hot to touch because the brakes on that side were dragging.
