I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport V6 with 270112 miles. I keep it clean! Oil changes every other month, the whole 9 yards.
2 weeks ago, out of nowhere( didn't build up to issue, just happened)it started running really rough at idle. Moving it up to speed it seemed to run fine, then it threw codes.( Sorry do not remember the codes) it was misfiring on 4. Took it to a local shop where they service it, and they said it was the plugs and coils. 270k miles, ok, they replace them with Bosch Plugs and Duralast Coils.( not OEM, but what I could do at the time) Got it back ran great for 6 days, not 1 issue! Then at a stop sign and it started back the same. Same code, same misfire on 4.
Not wanting to, but not close to any well known garages, I took to Toyota. They checked Compression and leak down, all tested good. Checked Fuel injectors all were fine. Said it was the after market parts, And put OEM parts in it $1625. Got it back and was looking good til I got 5 miles down the road, and it started the same exact thing. But this time its not throwing a code for misfire, its saying rich fuel, bank 2. They said they were good, but now they are bad. Need Bank 2 replaced ( 3 Port and 3 Direct injectors- $2900) WTF ok, do it, at this time They've had my truck for 9 days. I live in my truck basically, need it! They did, and it never made it out of the shop afterwards, now saying Bank 1 needs replaced, another $2900. Please tell me this is not because I took it to Toyota. and advice? Im getting ready to be 8k $$ in the hole

    The dealer parts cannon approach...
They've missed twice, but they'll be happy to keep shooting as long as you give them the ammo.

Well I would have changed to plugs to oem (Denso I think) along with ignition pack. I am hoping you’ve changed plugs before… like 100k?
I’d also clean the throttle body. Air filter….

If they keep throwing parts at it they will eventually figure it out. Good luck with it!

All have been replaced. Plugs and Coil Packs replaced around 120k miles ( had them replaced while I could, wasnt having any issues then), filters, Followed the PM guide for the most part. I am on the road a lot, so my truck has to run!

Would be really helpful if you posted codes. Hard to help you if you do not

I bet your ACIS door flap fell apart in the plenum.

The parts cannon approach is criminal. Modern vehicles have the ability to tell you what cylinders are impacted and, with testing, many diagnosis can be confirmed. But, it takes a very good tech to do that. Unfortunately and ironically, Toyota techs are generally not those people. If it were mine, I would get it back to OE parts (and not from Amazon/Ebay either!) and find a better shop. In short, never let shops tell you that just because the high mileage, everything needs to be replaced.
