I'm in the middle of installing my Countor and already I'm realizing I really want to get some electronic locks. Ideally, I'd like them tied to the door locks so I don't have to carry a fob (often I'm using the truck just with the credit card key in my wallet).

As best I can tell, I have two options:
    1. Electrolatch 2970 - which has a controller and dedicated wires to the lock & unlock wires of the door.
    2. Canopy Locking Systems IND6 - no controller, but the locks have two wires and appear to be your standard 12V motors where you flip the polarity of the wires- just like many automotive door locks. (I have an email to CLS to confirm.)

As far as I can tell, both need to be wired into the door locks and I've been going through the manual and scratching my head to make heads or tails of it, because I can't seem to find all the info I'd expect? Without the full wiring diagram, I can't find the fuse to figure out if I can wire in the extra load of the CLS locks or if I'd need a pair of relays if I got that route? The Electrolatch controller seems to have built in relays based on it's need for 10A power.

So here is the connection for the locks... it appears to be the standard flip polarity to drive the motor forwards/backwards to lock/unlock:
    doorlockwires.png

Note: for some reason the javascript seems broken when I click on the links for the connectors nothing happens. But I did find the location & connector types for L8 / P4:
    doorposition.png

But I'm unable to find the wiring diagram showing which controller they are connected to, which fuse, and colors of the wires? Would be great to be able to just pull up the door sill panel and splice in there without having to remove the entire door panel to get access to the P4/M8 connector.

Anyone do this before or know how to find the necessary info?

The closest I found to the actual locks was the antenna's in the door handles:

Tap the wires and use them as triggers to added relay n fuse set up.

    Thanks! that helps a lot.

Out of curiosity, where did you get that diagram? As best as I can tell, it wasn't included in the FactoryManuals.net package.

You could assemble your own lock/unlock relay gadget and solenoid. But then the rest of the install parts might be a bothersome chore.

using a pair of SPDT relays, each with a fuse seems pretty straight forward? The Canopy Locking Systems solution is fairly inexpensive once you convert AUS to USD: https://www.canopylocks.com.au/alu-cab/ind-6.html and they even support a pin so you can open from inside as an added bonus.

I guess the only challenge with this is if the pulse from the Tacoma ECU is too short for the locks and they don't fully unlock. At that point would need to add a simple circuit like a 555 timer I guess. That's one advantage of the ElectroLatch system with it's controller- not having to worry about that sorta thing. I guess I should ask CLS how long they need it to be and measure the the pulse with my ocilloscope.

Any chance you have access to the diagnostic info as well? Curious if Toyota specifies the length of the door lock/unlock pulse? Canopy Locks have told me their controller (which doesn't integrate into the truck locks like the ElectroLatch does) uses a 520ms pulse.

Oh well, was worth a try. I've got another possible line on the info. Worst case, I'll use an ocsilloscope to find out. Will post what I find.

or may be able to add a cap with size based on max current draw

1.2Amps is a lot of capacitor- easier to drive the relay. I’m hoping the taco locks are driven long enough where it doesn’t matter. We’ll see I guess.

Mostly just waiting until tomorrow to order parts from Australia. Last thing I want is a surprise bill because someone decided to add a few hundred $$$ worth of import taxes.

Welp, ordered the electronic latch retrofit kit as Australia doesn't seem to be on the list and it should fly well under the de-minis rule anyways.

I got a peek at the AllData info for the locking system. Same info as I've seen via elsewhere- there is a ~500ms trigger for the tailgate but doesn't specify anything for the door locks. As far as I can tell, nobody else has tried this on a Gen4 and I haven't really heard much about Gen3's either, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks again for all the info @caribe makaira !

Oh, just realized I was reading it wrong. It's not a "pulse". There is a "unlock detection switch input" to the ECU to indicate unlock/lock state.

So basically the ECU drives the motor until it's moved from lock->unlock or vice versa rather than being time based.

Totally. just it basically has endstops rather than timed. So the pulse may be variable.

And yes, I'm always over thinking things. :D

Confirmed. Canopy Locks retrofit kit works fine using relays and the Taco's door lock wiring. I used the passenger b-pillar wiring so that the canopy locks unlock on the 2nd button press. Will post again with some photos once I get the other 5 locks wired up and the wiring cleaned up a bit.

    Thanks again @caribe makaira !
