I’ve been noticing a whining noise when pressing the gas at speed (it stops with no gas) in my 2006 tacoma with pretty high mileage. I’ve attached a video, my guess is that the diff is old and the teeth have worn straight but I’d appreciate some second opinions on whether I should be looking for a new diff or if it’s fine

Unless you've gotten water in the diff 236,000 miles isn't a lot.

My truck makes a similar noise too but I think it’s gear whine. 4cyl 5 spd. It’s in that 55-65 range it does it. 210k

It wasn't in the video, but I'd guess the noise is there during heavier deacceleration too, very common in the new vehicles. The sound was different than my diff noise in my much newer 2021 with 85,000 miles, but videos lie to me all the time.

Might try 140W oil in the diff.

Yeah, that sounds like a diff whine.

236,000 miles 380km just to be clear

Is diff whine an issue or more of a nuisance, can anything be done to stop it?

    See above, try 140W.

    EDIT:
Just to be clear, there are regear places that only recommend you run 140W oil in the regeared diffs they supply.

Time for a rebuild, namely new bearings.

Agreed, i’ll definitely be rebuilding or replacing the diff

In the meantime, is there any immediate threat daily driving on it?

Also was planning to drive it 2500km over a few days next month…
