I have a 98 extended cab with the 3.4 auto...

Lately I have noticed my transfer case has been louder than usual. Jacked up the truck onto 4 stands.

In 4 wd all 4 tires turn (that's good), however, once switched back to 2 wd the front driveshaft kept spinning...

It took considerable effort to make it stop by hand. As soon as I let it go, it started going again...

From everything I have read the front driveshaft should not be spinning in 2wd.... maybe a bit, but no real effort needed to make it stop, by hand...

I am wondering if somehow the transfer case is "partially " engaged ...

When was the last time you changed your front diff and transfer case gear oil?

It doesn't have to necessarily be the xfer case- Both the front diff and the xfer case disconnect, so if the front drive shaft is spinning, it the front diff could be binding as well.

Never thought of just changing fluids... I think it's been a hot minute since I changed case and axle fluid..

In addition to the oil change, I'd also suggest putting it into, and out of 4wd a few times to make sure the actuators are moving freely.

Changed out both fluids. Seems to have made a big difference. Not nearly as loud as it was.. Still some vibration but hoping it decreases as the new fluids get to work..

    Thanks..
