Any woodworkers?

The first time I used my Grizzly jointer. What a joy!

 

My wedding memorial plaque was accepted. Thanks for the advice, direct or indirect this group provided. The blank spot has their real invitation but hid it here.

FWIW, I need to do the same thing to my table saw.

Man, box elder is just such a pretty wood. Obviously the one you kept for yourself has the most character to it, but even these have so much uniqueness to each one. I've said it before, there's just something about those little waves of scarlet hanging on those crosses, its truly special, and hopefully gives the people on the receiving end a true appreciation for not only the craftmanship in each one, but the meaning behind it all. Not gonna push that topic any further, but all that to say, you're really using your craftmanship and skills to share an important message, just as songwriters and musicians do with their own form of art, and I'm glad you share your work here with us

Lots of you guys actually, there's some really cool projects that get posted here, and as a non-skilled wood-sawer/gluer/screwer/sander, its inspiring to see you skilled fellas creating stuff

 

Box elder is a much underrated wood in my opinion. It is a fairly hard wood and can be dense. It's nice to work with even if it doesn't have the characteristic red from the fungus that causes it. It is in the maple family of woods and is sometimes called Manitoba maple. Most consider it a weed, kinda like mulberry. But since I chainsaw my own lumber I grab it when I can. Most tree services are happy to give the logs away to get rid of it.
Just mill it!

Has anyone seen plans for these? Pull out and fold down steps for kitchen base cabinets?

Pretty neat but you would need one for every overhead cabinet.

 

Our idea is one on each side of the stove and between the two base cabinets. These open and fold either direction, so in effect they are in front of each upper cabinet in our layout. Thinking about it for the pantry as well if I can find a plan. For that cost at retail we'll keep moving the step stool.

 

Has anyone done any joinery work with western red cedar? I'm wondering it will take a dovetail type of joint . I have some 2x6 that I want to use as the upper railing cap ( party rail ) but in one corner, there's not enough overlap with the 16'er to do a full miter or even a half lap. I started thinking that maybe a dovetail type of joint could hold the 2 pieces together.

 

Warning: I am not a joinery guy. I can miter, but it ends there. That said I've been working with redwood and western red cedar since my first house in 1985. The cap rail on my breezeway fence is just miter - it is a bizarre angle though. 83° or some such.

First it probably will work, but so light care must be taken. A rail constructed so the joint is mainly cosmetic, not structural sounds more do-able.

The largest problem will be expansion and contraction. I am not sure how long it would hold.

I do find heart redwood to be a bit stronger when well aged. Good luck finding dense old growth heart of either wood, but heart cedar is more accessible.

Have you googled around for ideas? I didn't look.

 

I tried looking around for joinery using the red cedar outside of jewelry boxes and things like that, I didn't see anything like what I'm thinking about doing. I did see some and some T&G wall covering and big timber framing sized beams that were mortised and tenoned/pegged but again that's at the other end of the spectrum. I'm thinking along the lines of a sliding dovetail style joint to get the 2 pieces joined. I might try a practice joint on some scrap.

 

Sounds like a plan. Sure is easy to work with, but wear a mask!

 

Anyone else like to pretend they're machinists and get ridiculous tolerances out of their woodworking machines?

Tools for the job (this one was pretty easy; no mallet for tapping the table, this time)



Check the saw blade, rotating the same tooth, front to back



Check and adjust fence (had to slip a piece of foil tape between the metal fence and plywood face towards the rear in order to dial it in)



Test a cut

Nice work! I try to start as accurate as I can knowing that I will likely screw it up somehow later.

 

Made a few Washington ornaments/ party favors for my wife and her friends. A bunch of them are meeting in Seattle for the weekend in a couple of weeks.




Also made a new Blanton’s stopper display out of a scrap piece of cherry.
