Icon 1.5" AAL and removing overload leaf

    Hey everyone,
    I’ve been searching on Tacomaworld forums and can’t find a clear answer to my questions.
    I’m looking to install 5100s bilsteins up front and icon 1.5” AAL in the rear.

    A shop told me that with Icon, since you are removing the overload leaf, you will not actually be getting a 1.5” lift with icons 3 leaf pack.

    Can anyone attest to this? Or have you guys had no issues getting 1.5” lift in the rear with removing the over load leaf.

    Every truck is different so the result will vary. Lift given by spring is dependant on how much weight is on those springs. So if you have a heavier truck you will get less lift from the same leafs as someone with a lighter truck. Even things like having a double cab or long box can make a difference. And the leafs you are starting with will effect how much lift an AAL can add. Just the way it is. This is why you will never get a straight answer on this.

    I've had 3 different leaf spring setups on my truck (AAL, Dakars, Deavers). All of them gave a slightly different lift than advertised. Some less, some more. And the first 2 sagged over time so I lost lift compared to when they were first put on. They were also too stiff when empty so I put some weight in the box and lost some lift while gaining better ride quality. There's many variables that can affect rear lift.

    What exact truck do you have and what lift numbers are you trying to achieve?

    I have a 2015 dbl cab short bed.

    I plan to raise the front 2" with 5100s and the rear with an 3 leaf pack. Possibly icon or headstrong. My initial thought was removing the overload but now see that some people leave it. I would like to keep some rake on my truck, possibly 1/2". I think if I leave the overload in ill be 1" higher in the rear.

    Well something to keep in mind is that your OEM leafs are likely already sagged (basically all 2nd gen leafs do this). So lets say they sagged 1/2". You starting point is basically -0.5" then. If you add 1.5", you end up with a net 1" lift over stock. I don't know if the number is 1/2" or not, but I can basically promise your leafs are sagged if they are original.

    You can check this too. Measure from the centre of the wheel/hub directly straight up to the fender. Factory rear measurement is 22" on these trucks (give or take 1/4" or so). Front is 21". So 1" difference/rake from factory basically. If you go 2" in the front, you'll want at least 1.5" plus whatever lift you've lost on the rear. So yeah I think that kinda reinforces the decision to leave the overload in.

    I have a progressive 3 leaf AAL and kept my overload for the lift and added support. I lifted my front about 2' and still had rake. I'm now about 3' up front and the truck is pretty level.
