New wheel bearing and hub installed...finally

Has anyone disassembled these and pressed back together using a Hub Grappler and wheel bearing press kit?
Or is this a 20 ton press assembly only?

I have done a Corolla with a Hub Grappler, heavy duty bearing press kit and compressed air.

 

Good question. I am taking mine into a machine shop to do it for me. About $65 a side. Which - might be worth the pain the ass of doing it myself. I watched the toyota time video numerous times and there is definitely a certain degree of skill and tools needed by the looks of it.

 

I assume to press old out bearing, remove broken race and press new in? Seems like a steep price but probably worth it.
This truck I am going to work on is an 03 PreRunner with 260+K miles so I was thinking new hubs and bearings.

 

You have a couple seals and a snap ring. You also have to press the hub out from the bearing.

 

I have read of a few people bitching that their bearings needed a 30-60 ton press to come out on the Gen 1 Tacoma's.
I just watched a YouTube video of a guy using a big cordless electric impact wrench and an OTC master hub tool (27213) on a gen 1 Tacoma.
The hub and bearing came right out and the new ones went right in. I guess it depends on the truck.
I don't have the $50 bearing retainer removal tool so I'll just pass on this job although one use would pay for itself.

 

I imagine it could be done w/ heavy duty joint press if patient. (Assembly anyway) Put the spindle in the freezer overnight and use a dry moly lube. Disassembly might be challenging. I had mine in my HF 20t press, real heat and a pipe on the bottle handle. Scared the snot out of me when it broke free...

 

I assume doing this on a truck from New England vs a truck from Florida might be night and day.

 

Probably but this truck is from Texas.... and clean. Try not to crap yourself when it breaks free

 

I got a 20 ton press from harbor freight to do mine - worked like a charm. Scared the hell out of the neighbors when the bearing broke free - sounded like a shot gun.

 

Six minutes in the video shows using a cordless impact wrench removing the hub. Maybe the 1500+ impacts a minute acts differently on the hub than a press.
Nine minutes in the video shows removing the bearing. I also found a second video of another cordless impact wrench easily doing the job. Can't find the link now.

update, Going for it !!! I just ordered a bearing retainer removal socket and parts. I'm also lining up a machine shop just in case.

update: I just recognized his impact wrench as the Ingersol Rand. It is up there with the

$116 Milwaukee M18 Cordless Lithium-Ion 6-1/2" Circular Saw - 2630-20 - ( MILWAUKEE ) - BARE TOOL

Milwaukee M18 in terms of torque. I have the lowly Makita XWT08, should be interesting.

I also did one with a 20t hf press. It took everything that press had and like others have mentioned, it was scary as hell.

Got no tools, no shop, no know-how. Paid $500 for front wheel bearing on 13 Taco and thought it was $ well spent.

 

Not too bad for someone in your situation. Let me guess... it was the drivers side?

 

I'm still waiting on the guy to come over. I have all the parts ready. I also found out my youngest son has the $450 Milwaukee 3/4" cordless impact wrench. I may borrow it the day I start.

 

I thought the post 1st gen trucks have bolt-on assemblies that hold the bearing to the spindle which don't require press work?

Long story short...
I just did this today with the knuckle on the truck. I disconnected the tie rod to articulate the knuckle.
I used a Hub Grappler, Astro wheel bearing kit and a Makita impact driver.
It took the Hub Grappler to remove both the hub and bearing. The wheel bearing tool kit was used to install both.
The Malkita removed and installed the hub on torque setting 2 but removing and installing the bearing took setting 3 (max). I heard the pop when the hub was being removed except it wasn't loud.
This swivel impact drive adapter was needed as the knuckle only swings so far.
