Hey guys. New member here and first time posting. I have a 2019 SR5 V6 and recently came across some issues with the engine. Brought it to my local Toyota and they diagnosed an internal engine knock in the lower block and the truck is burning oil too. It blows white smoke just on initial cold start - it’s not consistent. They immediately said that I need a new engine and quoted me at $12,000 + tax for an engine with 8k miles on it at a local salvage yard. I am currently having it looked at by another Toyota service center (the place where I originally purchased the truck) for a second opinion. Reaching out here to see if there’s any advice for me on what to do? The truck only has ~96,000 miles on it. Ive tried to search for similar posts and couldn’t find anything helpful so I would appreciate any help here on this post. Thank you in advance.

At 96,000 miles, engine knocking, and burning oil, the most likely cause is lack of service. Previous owner, hardly change engine oil and engine oil filters, if don’t have service records, never know. Don’t know what second dealer going do, but drop engine oil pan see if metal particles, or check if rod bearings, and main bearings spin.

I’ve had regular maintenance done since buying the truck. I’m the only owner. Bought it brand new in 2019. I have all the records too. Will have to wait and see what second dealer is going to say.

Its dead, youre spinning your wheels asking for a second opinion.
Theres no cheap cheat / fix for a rod bearing knock & oil consumption.
Probably ran low on oil & wiped out the crank bearings = cause of the knock....
    oil consumption = who knows.....

    it needs an engine......

probably ran her low on oil multiple times prior to realizing you had an issue, that damaged the crank bearings....

If that the case, who did the regular maintenance on your Tacoma? Somebody BS about regular service. Have to wait to find out.

Not every failure is because of lack of maintenance. There are subpar manufactured parts out there that show their problems with age/use.

OP never mentioned where he had gotten his Tacoma serviced. If at Toyota dealer, cannot be cheap brand of engine oil, somebody else? Fake OEM engine oil filter?

I’ve had my truck’s maintenance done by a local mechanic whom I’ve known for a very long time, so I can say he’s trustworthy. He’s also a long-time Toyota Tundra owner and now Tacoma owner of the same generation.

I’ll keep you all posted as I find out more info. Sorry if it sounds like I’m beating a dead horse here - just trying to figure this out with all the help I can get.

    Quit while you’re behind.

Lots of 3.5 Tacoma engines seem to be blowing up, impeccable service or not.

depending on what they find & approach you with.....
Ask about out of warranty assistance....
    CLP, customer loyalty program...
I know with fords, its common.
Basically if theres a pattern of failures or not, if its just out of warranty, etc...
Dealer discretion, thats why I preach get your services at the dealer & build a relationship...

Anyway, they basically turn the customer pay job back into warranty, you may need to pay a %'age of the total repair cost but will be peanuts in-comparison to full customer pay engine swap.

Kind of pisses the tech off but it is what it is, those fk bombs got dropped on me lots of times...
Talk to the writer, with the service manager, reach out to corporate, etc, beat that dead horse & keep beating...
Thats what I would do but I have 32 years of experience in the auto industry behind me....

10k oil changes as per owners guide? That service interval is more about marketing. Might work if you had a long highway commute but not for a lot of short trips or idling in traffic. I would not assume you your local Toyota service department is using good oil though some do. It's usually a no name from 55 gallon drums. Some dealers even put the incorrect oil in the transfer case or manual transmission (should not be GL5 since that's bad for brass components). I'm wondering if I should have opted for the 2.7 4cyl instead of the v6 in my 2023. Lots of things like plastic crossover pipes at the back of the engine to crack when it gets old. Plus it sounds like a diesel when idling sometimes.

It's too bad when you spend a lot of money on what used to be a very reliable brand and try and maintain it well only to have it fail early. Toyota manufacturing does not seem to be as good as it once was but they are not the only ones these days. Only now it costs a small fortune to repair.

Having owned the truck since new, the OP has a lot better insight to use and maintenance history than most when it comes to many of the failures posted in the forum. Although, I don't think anyone can say they are the only one that has EVER been behind the wheel. Isn't the failure in these particular engines often a valve/head issue and not a bad rod or crank bearing?
Regardless, I sure would be interested in hearing if anything in the vehicle's history would have caused this to be on the radar? For example, regular (but extended mileage) oil changes, overheating, bearing noise on startups, lots of towing, excessive short trips, trail/stream crossings, after-market engine tune, other engine services performed, oil additives/FI cleaners, etc.....
I understand that things can just happen, too, regardless of how they're taken care of.
Sorry this happened to you OP!!!!!!!!!

There is a valve burning issue some of them suffer from and it seems to be the valve guide either wears out or was poorly toleranced to begin with which lets the valve wobble and not seat as time goes on.

There have also been random failures like cylinder walls all scratched up and the block making a bunch of noise or whatever. The valve issue is more well known and recurring, but there have been other random engine failures too.
