A couple years back I got in a front end collision with a tree. I took the opportunity to replace the front bumper on my 2001 Tacoma with a tube bumper. I had the body shop install it.

After last spring out in the desert, there started to be a pretty fierce rattling sound coming from the front end. I believe it to be originating from this cracked area behind the bumper where the bumper mounts. It may be a combination of the crack rubbing and the bushings making the noise. I can get it to make the sound (a loud clicking really) when I bounce on the bumper.

I'm sure it's related to the extra weight on the front, and I'm guessing someone might have some experience with this issue. I'm not even sure what you would call that part of the vehicle that the crack is occuring in. I think one is starting to develop on the other side as well.

I'm wondering about possibilities for repair and strengthening this spot to fix both the sound but also the possibility of the bumper falling off. I don't know how to weld myself, so I probably would need to take it to a shop if that is what's needed.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Fred

These trucks are old now and a lot of these suspension bushings will start getting noisy. Especially during the cold weather. I would un bolt that and get it welded. I know your in CA but have you inspected the truck for rust areas?

    welcome to tw!!!

the good news: that is not going to cause your bumper to fall off. that is the radiator core support mount

bad news: that will definitely need to be welded to be repaired by a competent fabricator or body shop. is the driver side looking ok in the same spot? the core support is all one welded piece and is a pain to replace but there is damage in multiple places it may be worth doing so

    Thanks for the replies.

It looks like the driver's side is starting to crack as well.

Sounds like I will seek professional help on this one I think.
