I think around ~140 mm (~5.5") is what you want. You basically want about 1/16" of thread protruding out of the back of the harmonic balancer. Adding that to the width (depth) of the hb + 1.5" for the thickness of the 2x4, gets you right around there. Probably best to err on the side of too long and have some washers sitting around that you can take up extra slack with if need be

Hate to say this, but if you are putting a cheater pipe on the torque wrench, then you are not torquing to spec. Technically, in training, they say that using extensions will affect the value. Dry threads vs lubed threads will affect the value. If you are using a 1/2" drive wrench, may need to rent or borrow a 3/4 drive to get a long enough wrench to get to the proper torque. Or have a stronger friend do it. The torque wrench is engineered to work with a certain length lever, technically if you are gripping anywhere other than the designed grip, it changes the length of lever and therefore the torque applied.

If you pull off the crank pulley again, lay it engine side down on a table. I bet the mounting surface will not be parallel to the table. That would give you that wobble you see in the video.

Right. I don’t use a pipe. I grab another person to help me. I was just sayin if I had to boost it another 1/4 turn….

I ordered another one just in case…. I seem to be a defective parts magnet. I’m trying to learn to order more than I need. Like I just bought new drums & ordered three & I’m returning one. Course there’s a learning curve in comparing new to old. I did check various things (size, bolt hole, etc), however I did not lay it flat. We’ll see….

The DIY wood tool would work just as well, but I picked up this last time I was in there:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NRGRYM...p_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWxfdGhlbWF0aWM

and it worked great for me

I tried that one this last time & it would not stay put. I’d get it set & no matter what I did, it would wing off to the side & be hanging out of the pulley. If the studs were longer, that’d be great. Plus that would make it so the balancer & pulley are secured together.

As far as my struggling with it, maybe it was because I used it on the aftermarket pulley? Although I didn’t see any marked differences between the two pulleys. I used the starter bump method to remove the original, so I had nothing to compare.

that is the one I got
Wouldn’t fit flush either bc of Chinese casting
I modified it (well corrected the shape with metal files) so fitted snug/tight

as far as the 200+lbs of torque for CS bolt
My 3’ craftsman T wrench doesn’t even go that high without hearing the spring creek/turn handle getting too tight to get over 160
I will get flamed for this
But I used my race friends torque specs
    ATAS
    As tight as shit

I don’t think you’re alone there, using an impact wrench.
My confession -Due to the fact that I could not make that holder tool work & it was all I had that was made for the job, I decided to use the camshaft pulley holder & did just that, held a cam pulley whilst someone else torqued the crankshaft bolt. I admitted this on another thread & thought I was going to get an earful. No one said a word….
That said, I wouldn’t risk installing it that way again.
I actually don’t think using an impact is a bad idea. If I did it that way I’d put bolts through the pulley 1st. I didn’t realize the importance of this til recently.

Unk exactly how much clearance 3.4l has
But my impact wouldn’t fit unless I RI’d rad

if I did T chain again, would def hit that bolt hard with impact
    Keep everyone posted K!

Is ATAS better than the German torque spec?

So I’m going over this with a fine tooth comb. I don’t find any wobbling when on a flat surface. What I did find was this. (Keep in mind I don’t have all the handy measuring tools, so I have to wing it.) When measuring between the cs pulley & the balancer at different points, the depth itself is fine. & I can’t really find any or much dif from
    IMG_4152.jpg
However, whilst measuring the depth with my handy caliper, I had to turn it flat side against the inner edge. I started noticing, just by unintentional twists when I was done, it was hitting sooner or just felt different depending on the spot. This is a pick of the end of the caliper
    IMG_4151.jpg
So I started checking in between by using the wider side & found this, which tells me somewhere below, the balancer is tilted in respect to the pulley or something like that. I turned the pulley to get the 2nd shot.
    IMG_4150.jpg IMG_4149.jpg
Also, worth mentioning that the total depth is 48.4mm.

    Hope I explained this well….

    So, am I onto something?

I think so. This is what I was referring to when I said that the two parts aren't in line. I had a different pulley in mind however. It has been about 6 years since I worked on one of these engines. Regardless, that would cause a wobble because the two halves are spinning in different planes. How does the spare one you bought look?

It’s being delivered today. I wish I had a pipe that is the same inner diameter of the shaft hole (ha-ha! New almost swear), so I could see if it looked askew (tilted). At the backside I can feel a little progressive dif from the outer edge of the balancer to the inner edge of the pulley.

& just as an aside, when I installed this one, even though I did it in an unconventional way, I did insert bolts in it to keep the balancer & pulley in line.

it arrived. It seems better. Has these markings on it though, that the other did not. Doesn’t necessarily looked used, tested? They go all the way around it.
