I'd like to do a little reading and eventually buy/install rear disk brakes on my Tacoma. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

There’s many different products. Some have an e brake some don’t. E brake is probably better but costs more.

the real prize would be if you figure out how to do it for cheap with commonly available parts.

like for example if maybe it is possible to slap on parts on similar vehicles that already come with disc brakes some of which are available for parts in a junkyard. Ie 4runner etc.

That way you are not stuck trying to order expensive parts from the same “custom” seller who may not exist in the future or may not divulge what the parts are in the kit.
As opposed to if you were to figure out how to run 4runner parts, and later on needed to replace the pads, you could simply acquire new 4runner pads which would be available.

on the other side maybe these expensive aftermarket kits don’t do that and maybe the only “proprietary” thing is fitting hardware such as a custom machined caliper bracket, which would not need to be replaced when doing a pad change.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
With dump trucks and school buses still successfully using from brakes, most folks realize after their research that the conversion is not a great cost benefit.

Keep the drums out back and do a BBK up front if you really think you need an upgrade.

My truck is on 35s and has a ton of extra weight from bumpers, sliders, skids, topper, etc so I wanted to upgrade the brakes. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze to do rear discs.

Wilwood makes a few different front brake kits that work on Tacomas depending on your budget and wheel size.

My trucks heavy too and feel super confident when I’m braking.

I don't expect a cost benefit. In fact there's actually a deficit for the extra parts plus labor.

We think alike. I'm hoping someone will chime in and tell me he did this much cheaper using junkyard parts. We'll see.

According to the pictures, the rotor are on the wrong side based on the drilled pattern

I have this on my ‘22
I’m heavy, with a lot of weight in the back
I am extremely happy with the huge increase in braking performance
Yes, weight does transfer forward during braking, but all of the parrots do not have the sense to understand you aren’t running R compound slicks on the front of your truck on a prepared track surface
In every situation but that situation, more rear braking on a heavily loaded rear is extremely advantageous
This kit uses FJ components, which you can get at any parts store
I LOVE this paired with EBC “Orange Stuff” pads and cryo-treated solid rotors all around
The pads eat rotors fast, the cryogenic treatment makes both the pads and rotors last substantially longer

I installed the SOS kit. I like that it uses OEM 4Runner calipers and rotors (for easy future consumables replacement) but their custom backing plate that the caliper bolts to does not have a dust shield of any kind. This may or may not be a problem depending on how you use your truck but I feel it's something to consider. The Pedder's kit from Australia does have a nice OEM like protective backing plate and kind of makes me wish I had purchased their kit instead.
