I have a 3rd gen TRD OR, replaced the OEM 265/70-16 P metric Goodyears (I had one rock cut in the tread, early on, repairable) at around 45K miles with 265/75 KO2’s, Load Range E. About 50K on the BFG’s, no flats and really great tires for my use. 99.99% paved, the rest mostly rocky desert stuff. I’m prepared to repair a cut/hole in tread or sidewall but would rather avoid it. I’m not a rock crawler by any means, my truck is basically stock, but I appreciate the security of an E tire (aired down of course) when I’m 50-150 miles of washboard away from cell service in DV or Utah or eastern Oregon.

I’ve definitely noticed mileage and performance degradation with these tires and for some reason it bothers me more recently. Anyway, they are getting worn and they’re 7 years old, and I’ve been thinking of going back to an OEM size, but still LT’s: 245/75-16. A super common size, lots of options available, but consistently a few pounds lighter than even 265/70’s, which are also harder to find in a heavy duty construction.

I know there are skinny tire threads and even a few for 215/85 and 235/85 specifically, but the 245 seems to get ignored. By the way, I put 245/70 Cooper AT3’s on our van (also 16’s) but they’ve dropped that size and no one else makes a 245/70 in the right load rating, so I may end up buying 8 245/75’s. So, my question is if anyone is happy using 245/5’s for occasional rough off-road use and would they give better mpg or performance than 265/70’s, all in an AT style and LT construction (C,D, E). Thanks.

    I run 245/75 winters vs LT265/75 summers

I’ll say they save fuel but as far as apples to apples it’s not going to make a massive difference, it’s only 20mm width difference.

my biggest perk is cost, 245 are much cheaper to purchase
