This is my 1999 Tacoma XtraCab 2WD Base Model; 4 speed auto

    280k+ miles on odometer
    215 65 R15

It has been repainted (Hood and roof had extensive damage; camper shell was originally white)

It does need an alignment though.

Being nearly 6ft (182cm) tall with a slim build, I am able to fit inside my truck. Unfortunately, at our apartment complex, most of the vehicles on the lot are full size trucks and SUVs - blocking my visibility when backing out or in.

Can I hypothetically run bigger tires without rubbing and using a lift kit? I just need more ground clearance to avoid scraping the oil pan (and perform oil changes) and get better visibility.

    Thanks.

A slightly bigger tire that won't rub won't fix the problems you listed.

We have a 5 lug forum that might be helpful for you

A good rear camera kit might help you backing

Wheels matter a lot in terms of clearances. On my 2nd Gen with OE 15 x 6 wheels I went from 215 x 75 to 235 x 75 no lift no rub. Enough taller to notice getting in and out of truck.

Start using aftermarket wheels with more width and 'stance' enhancing offsets and you can get into rubbing issues quickly

The tire calculator will help you do comparisons. Remember that clearance wise your working wth radius, not diameter. And going taller changes the effective final gear ratio, meaning more sluggish in power delivery.

Thank you for the input. I wish I was very technical, but will learn more along the way.

Several factors I did not consider are recalibrating the speedometer, compromising fuel efficiency, and inspecting components prior to installation.

In short, I will have a discussion with several tire shops (assuming they have availability), and possibly get a quote. Obviously, not very wise to cheap out on tires.

Update: April 6th, 2025 - Got an alignment and resizing the tires for 225 70 15
