Oil catch can?

Anybody install an oil catch can on the 4th gen yet? Not sure if I think it even needs one, the point of direct and port injection is to keep the intake system clean while also being efficient. Interested in what others think about this.

 

I doubt if the exterminators are installing catch cans on their trucks. Are you putting more miles on your truck than an exterminator? If not you probably don't need an oil catch can. Maybe if your are upgrading the turbo you could benefit from a catch can.

 

I’ve had one since January. It’s collected about 1/2 a cup of oil. Is it worth it? Thats 1/2 a cup of oil that didn’t contribute to gumming up the intercooler and lines. Also probably less carbon build up in the combustion chamber. I think it will have long term benefits but nothing noticeable short term.

It’s an added layer of maintenance so checking it regularly is critical. When it was super cold -20 it would collect about 1/2 cup of water per tank of fuel! I’ve noticed the more the boost the more it collects ie towing.

I bought mine off of Amazon. Not sure it is needed, but it can not hurt anything. There are many price levels available, I just bought 1 with good reviews.

Ya the benefits of a catch catch fall short if the lines freeze due to moisture content and cause a pressure buildup.

You can insulate them but I wouldnt run a catch can up north unless you know what you're doing and check it weekly.

 

Not sure if I'm following this one... The unit is attached to PCV line (which is designed to vent gases from the crankcase back to the combustion chamber). So basically changing the design of the PCV and filtering oil, I assume. What has that do with the turbo...

 

It keeps carbon from recirculating into the engine, the throttle stays clean and ring lands stay clean. On turbos the pressure is higher so I imagine there is more gases to expel.

It's a great idea on the old direct injection only models, but its not a huge deal on Toyotas with dual injector systems.

 

I understand what you're saying , but I'm a tad suspect. Sounds more like a gimmick. I remember the only vehicle, I owned, that was notorious for pushing oil through the PCV was my older 460 CID Ford V-8 (on my RV) and chocking the engine. I can't remember how many time I cleaned the system and replaced the valve. I finally had to disconnect the PCV to make it function better. Although not a turbo motor.

 

I got the Burger one, would avoid it for now unless you dont mind doing some small modifications

 

My understanding of the T24A-FTS is that it has its own oil/air separater chamber (Looks serviceable ) built in before it reaches the PCV valve. Unlike some other engines that utilize an "L shape turn" in the valve cover on a Turboed engine which necessitates a catch can.

 

Hopefully it works. I still have flashbacks with my old BMW's crankcase ventilator valve. The CVV on the M54 engine has an oil separator built into it that's overly complex, sensitive to cold weather, and an unmitigated pile of crap.

 

I just finished installing the BMS OCC on my Tacoma. Mine is the Hybrid TRD Off-Road. I havent driven but around the block. Seems pretty secure. The only issue i had was where it gets installed on the engine. The two bolts have washers that can't be removed. I had to go to a hardware store and get the same size bolts for install. Without the washer, everything fits securely.

 

I've heard that installing a catch can on a Toyota will automatically void the warranty. That info is floating around on the 'net.

Sagebrush, it doesn't automatically void your warranty. If you google the question "Does an Oil catch can void a toyota warranty" it will give you the protection as to why. Basically, the dealership has to prove beyond all doubt that a failure was caused by an aftermarket part. If they cant, the warranty stands. Now with a catch can, if you empty it like youre supposed to, and actually take care of it the way you should (and properly install it) you'll have no issues.

 

Any video which needs to put "truth" in the title to get clicks is in my humble opinion much more likely to give you the opposite.

Kind of like anyone saying they have a humble opinion, probably doesn't.
