Hi, I’m thinking about trading my 2016 Honda Civic with 68,000 km for a 2015 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab I4 (2.7L, 159 hp) with 177,550 km, priced at $19,888 CAD. I need a truck for my landscaping business, and this is the best deal I’ve found near me. I’ve spoken with the seller and plan to check it out in a couple of days. I’m not really a car person, so I’d love some advice. Is this a smart move? Please let me know what you think and help me improve this if you can!

Check the frame very well for rust. The areas typically of concern are the inner boxed sections up near the cab mounts (inside part of frame closest to drivetrain) and the front rear spring mounting area. The C channels are laminated steel and the inner portions will rust.

Buying any vehicle for your business with almost 180000 miles on it is a poor idea. Since you, your income and your landscaping business are dependent on a dependable vehicle a high mileage truck doesn’t make any sense. Consider leasing a newer truck and writing off the lease and other expenses as business expenses on your taxes.
How the hell are you using a Honda civic for a landscaping business?
(Prove me wrong OP but I think this is probably a one and done post)

the truck he’s looking at only has 100k miles (177k km) so just broke in. I do agree about the lease with a business.

Are you going straight across pricewise? Is the car paid off?

Good catch, I missed that. Since that’s about 110000 miles the truck probably isn’t a bad idea, but still starting with a used vehicle with a 110000 miles for daily business vehicle isn’t the best idea. Anything is better than a Honda civic for a landscaping business though.

the first years had bullet proof driveline, but frames are worse than a 2nd gen, really inspect the frame first! In Edmonton Alberta ( Alberta second to Texas for number of trucks) there would be a feeding frenzy especially for only 3000$
for land scaping you might want to beef up the rear suspension to carry the weight

How much mulch/ landscaping materials to do you plan on hauling at one time? I have a '15 Taco with the 2.7, it's a useless dog for anything more than a few bags of sakrete or a few hundred pounds of building supplies. I'm not trying to be discouraging, but you may want to think about a full size truck to do serious work.
