I want to guide my nephew with his 4th gen mods and maintenance, but I only have a 3rd gen

    I couple of questions ...

Chin strap ... just a few small screws that are easily removed, or did they make it more difficult? They know it is ridiculous but never gave serious thought to removal.

My 3rd gen tailgate is easy to take out so I bought a Sabellco lock. When I looked at his tailgate it did not seem to have the same "easy access theft", but the weekend had other priorities. Is a Sabellco or a tailgate lock from TW member christian06 still needed?

Oil changes ... drain plug flat on the bottom, makes a Fumoto valve wise? And Motivx oil filter housing tool still the same?

Headlight bulbs. I replaced my H11 low beams with H9. Still a plan for the 4th gens or what is the new plan?

I replaced halogen taillights with VLED VTAILS kit. 4th gen owners have their preferences?

Maybe soon will be another visit with more time spent on THEIR truck, as his wife is just as interested as he is in at least some of the modifications to the truck.

Shin strap - easy removal. All your questions are answered on the forum. Easy search...

Tailgate - easy to remove, mine is an SR so I'm not sure if nicer models have any security devices.

Oil change - Fumoto is available a lot of guys have them on '24s. They switched to a canister filter, no filter draining!

    Lights - all LEDs now

You’ll need plastic a-arm plugs after removing the spoiler.

Oil drain plug is in a safe location, I added a Fumoto and don’t see how it could get hit?

Thanks. I have been around enough to know search, but I thought I might ask all questions on my mind to get all answers.

A-Arms can be purchased at stealership? He does not crapazon, neither do I. He is 350 miles away so I can just advise from a distance, but will probably visit again on a maintenance visit just to be there.

Yeah you can get them at the dealer for a lot more than online....or an autoparts store should have something that will work.

Outside of removing the air dam there really isn't much I'd want to modify on a 4G. 4G looks good lifted but when I look at them I don't get that itch. I'd probably leave the air dam on a Rwd if I had one.

For the maintenance stuff and potential part number stuff I would suggest hitting up @Soft Taco and checking out his Team Oil Drop youtube channel. Lots of info and I think he's doing a 4G now?

Lower spoiler ("chin strap") is 9 bolts easily removed with a screw gun or impact. Two outboard of each tow hook recess, 5 in between. You must reinstall bolts after removal to keep the other parts tight. Watch for the felt edge being secured correctly in front of the wheels.

Check for the 8 plugs on the arms. If not there, they can be ordered from a dealer and run <$3 each.

Online dealerships may become your son's friend. I use Fred Anderson the most. They pretty much always comp the shipping and are one of the lowest prices regardless.

Tailgate depends on your trim level. Mine is auto-locking.

Can't speak to the oil questions.

Other items to consider depending on interest:
    Redline hood struts
    Toyota front tow hooks
    Z precision cup holder replacement
Rear tow hook for driver side
OEM bed step for passenger side
    Spare tire lock
Canvasback door and seat covers depending on what you get into or four legged ones
Floor liners (TripleA or Lasfit or Weathertech are all nice)
Bed mat (OEM is heavy soft rubber. Grips like a champ)
    Bed cover / tonneau
    Wheels
    Wheel center caps
    Tailgate letter inserts

Much more but those are some easier ones

I did the trail pipe and the #500 mud flaps ("Canadian OEM") swap as well, plus the musology insert for the center console bin, plus a matte glass "protector" on my display to kill the majority of the glare reflection.
(In process of the upper front bumper, but that's part of a partial de-chroming)

Screen ProTech kit is a great add. I scratched my dash display the first time I wiped it off with a clean microfiber cloth.
Almost all lights are led, including taillights. The front inside marker/parking light are the only incandescent bulb. It can be easily replaced.
Front spoiler is easily removed. I think there were 6-8 bolts to remove and replace after removing the spoiler. You may need to purchase the LCA plugs if you don’t already have them.
I have a premium model so I can’t comment about tailgate. Mine locks and has a power function.
I also got an OBDII tool to turn off all seatbelt chimes, turn off pumped in engine noise, blinkers go five times instead of three when you 1/2 press the stalk and all windows and sunroof open when you long hoped the unlock button on the key fab.

Introduce them to the forum. It always been helpful for me. Just provide fair warning about what happens to your wallet when you look here too much.

His wife might join in the fun spending their ... errmmm ... "her" money. They already pull an old teardrop they are re-vamping. He mentioned the seatbelt chime but I suspect might not go as far as the OBDII tool or a "tune" if those are still a thing. He might just accept the chime.

I forwarded this thread link to him so he might learn how useless I really am to anything technical ...

Thanks and sure am! Just been absolutely swamped with work. Next video should be 4G spark plugs and then I’ll continue down the line. Rear diff and engine oil is already done.

Good to know. My nephew is hammered with work because he is early in his career so will find time or not as he and his wife want to do the work.
