    Hello,

I have a 21 off-road with 33 inch tires, auto transmission Trust me this this the twist on the re-gear. It doesn’t have any other mods than different rims and rock sliders from Greenlane off-road.

I had thought about a re-gear in the past as I tow my jet boat which is roughly 4500 lbs with trailer and gear. I do a ton of fishing with my little boat also which I why I opted for a Tacoma and not a tundra. A lot of the places I go are not as easy access with a tundra.

Anyway I know the re-gear would be better for towing over all, however my fear is the pinion gear giving out as about half the launches for the jet boat are off river beds, sand or gravel and rock. So I am in 4 low towing the boat out of the water it is generally for maybe a few hundred meters to where there is fire road or pavement.

Would the torque in 4 low pulling 4500 lbs out of the water be cause for concern? Would it be better to get a 4.88( from what I read the pinion gear has bigger teeth so less prone to breaking

thanks in advance for any input.

It shouldn’t be putting very much torque through the pinion just to pull the 4500 lb boat up the ramp. The 4.88 and 5.29 gears are not really known for being weak, and they actually see less torque through them due to the mechanical advantage of the lower ratio.

In short, I don’t think that should be a factor at all, just don’t gas the hell out of it which you shouldn’t need to.

No. It's the same torque at the wheels to move the load in this situation regardless of the gearing. Now you'll just do it with less throttle, less engine load, and a few more engine rpms.
