5lug Axle Info

    This thread is to give everyone a good understanding of 5lug axels and how they are different then 6lug axels

    Between 95-15 3 axels different axels were found under our trucks, the 7.5”,8.4” and 8.4” (for 2nd gen taco). All of these axels were set up for spring under axel (sua) vs the 6lug spring ove axel (soa). All used a softer 2 leaf pack vs the 6lug 3leaf pack. The e break setup was different from a 6lug in that the 5lug cable just went strait into the back of the drum while on a 6lug in soan across the axel and went to a mechanism on the outside of the axel.

    Toyota 7.5” axel 86-04 pickups and tacomas
    This is the smallest of the 3 axels. For tacomas this axel was found in 4cyl 5lug tacoma. It had a 27 spline count. It came with 2 different gear ratios Auto trans 3.58 manual trans 3.42
    Pre tacos had a more narrow axel but the 3rd was the same.
    There are a few options out there for different gears and lockers.

    Toyota 8.4” axel (1st gen tacoms)
    Found in v6 5lug tacomas, the axel is similar to the 6lug version and will take all the same internals. Came with a couple different gear ratios, s runner 3.15,

    Toyota 8.4” axel (2nd gen)
    In all 5lugs. 2nd gens axel is 2” wider on either side and use different mounting points then 1st gens. They came with manual trans 3.31 auto trans 3.53 gears, but accept the same internals as the 6lug, it will even take the same diff from the earlier 8.4”.

    I should note the 6 lug elocker axle shafts are 1/2 in longer than 5 lug and I'd assume 6 lug non elocker axle shafts. This is why Im 6 lug in the rear :( I did try to swap them but no game. Also 2nd gen 5 lug with auto is 3:53 gears.

    The elocker housing is different then a non elocker housing.
    But non e locker houseig should be the same as a 8.4” from a 1st gen other then length and the spring perches

    Why you go with a new axel vs just putting a arb or Detroit in it. Would of been simpler

    I got the whole axle for $400 and the new leafs for $100 so around $550 with some tools I didn't have, I got a locker with a slightly better gear ratio. I was looking at an arb but you cant beat that price lol

    An arb alone is close to a grand and I wanted a selectable locker still. I will still regear eventually but for now its got enough pep for that I need. (Also I may have a mk3 supercharger to go in :spy:)

    Ok im reviving another old thread but here we go, im looking to swap out my axle on my 5 lug tacoma. Im trying to figure out what gear ratio i currently have 96 tacoma V6 auto, but want to convert it to a manual and swap out the axle with something bigger but want to know what is compatible with what, tried searching and keep finding info on 4 bangers and 6 luggers.

    Are you possibly saying that I could take a 5 lug axle from a 2wd 1st gen tacoma with a V6 and swap out with 6 lug axleshafts from a 4wd 1st gen tacoma with a 4 cylinder in it?

    Yes and no.

    yes you would make it a 6lug. But you will end up with a SUA 6lug axle when you need a SOA 6lug axle.

    you will also have some weird gear ratio in the diff.

    but other then that its just a normal 8.4 axel

    Actually, what I'm trying to do is SUA. So this would be what I've been looking for. From what I've read over the past several months, with SUA you get a better ride and less axle wrap. Also I want to lower my rear a few inches.

    If you have a non elocker 8.4 rear axle you just need to get a locked for it regardless of engine.

    Sorry for dumb question but which is better for the 1st gen? I bought a LT 2004 5 lug and im going through and trying to beefup and clean up everything I can, idk much about axles but im eager to learn. I want to keep close to oem but "built" so would I be best to buy a housing for a 95-04 8.4" 5 lug and swaping that it? Ill confirm what's under the truck after work

    The plan is eventually to swap in the built yota 1 2rz with the supercharger from lce, but in all honesty I think it's just a fixation with wanting to make everything on the truck the best version of it possible. Im even looking at the rear disk break conversion from hellsgatehotrods just cause.

    Or o guess maybe since I've got the total chaos long travel I could swap to the 2nd gen axle since its wider? I'm assuming there isn't much aftermarket support either way
