Maybe I will check that out. Costs about as much as the combo from rust billet if shipping isnt too bad and I have seen that review before. Was hoping he would have rust bullet products like he did with the previous because it was his best one and he didn’t bring it again. I defiantly don’t want to just spray something over. I’m welding plates to my frame, im going to have to bring to bear metal in some spots anyways with my bed off, I might as well take care of of the rust that is there. In the from yes I’ll use waxoyl in the whole outside and spray the inside with fluid film. I’m jsut wondering how much if my og paint I should be planning on removing… starting to seem like all that’s behind the cab

That frame is in nearly perfect shape. Why are you planning to weld plates to the frame when there’s nothing to fix?

Sorry I forgot to mention I have a go fast camper in the back that I installed about 2 months ago. It is gets pretty heavy when I’m off-roading fully loaded and I have custom leaf packs designed for the weight, but I know these frames are prone to twisting and warping when out under stress off-roading while carrying a load which is what I plan doing a lot of. I’ve seen multiple people put kits on their truck and the guy who sold me the Gfc also I mentioned having to do it. I also am going to school for welding and fab at the moment so it’s kinda a mod that I find pretty sick and relatively easy

I'd remove as little of the original paint as possible. Based on how well it resists things like brake fluid, gasoline, and acetone, there aren't many cheap coatings that you'll be improving things with over the factory paint.

Then use a 2k epoxy primer over the bare metal.

I fully willing to spend the time and money. I think rust bullet or master coat would be the two best options, and I agree with keeping as much as the og paint as possible but if I use a phosphorus solution to remove the rust from the factory paint, then use a rust converter and paint on top. I feel like they wouldn’t adhere as well then if it was just bare metal, but do you think the primer would still stick fine to the factory paint if I cleaned it very well and removed all the rust or is that a no go?

If the oem paints sticking to the metal, then the other paint will stick to the original factory paint as long as you prep it right.

That’s what I’m thinking thanks a lot man huge help, probably going to use a good water based degreaser, a phosphate rust remover, and then a converter/primer before I throw on both of rust bullets coatings, I’m also going to Waxoyl the whole thing when I’m done, I want to keep this truck forever so I want to do it right

If only that original factory paint coating resisted the salt monster!

Just throwing in my .02 cents. As a corrosion prevention and control person .....

-Do not use a rust converter (not proven)
-Do not add dissimilar metals to the frame as steel will sacrifice itself for others metals like aluminum
-Preparation of the surface is key to the phase of application (just youtube that up) before coating
-Fluid Film is your best bet to cover, creep, and sustain (easy to spray inside frame and hard to get places)

If a product you see says it converts rust instantly or magically....question it. We've tested a lot of products in our labs by real scientists who are metallurgists and such. Not an influencer or whatever. lol

Fun Fact - It costs the Department of Defense in Corrosion Control annually over 20 Billion for all it's weapon systems, equipment and facilities!!!

Have you found any acid products that will eat dissolve the surface rust well enough to properly paint
I have been investigating this on the side

The plates I’m adding are steel, I’m an fabricator and the rust converter is only going to be used after I removed the rust because it acts a primer with the brand of paint I’m using. Have you checked out rust bullet or done any tests with them? I’ve heard loads of good things and countless review articles and videos. And yes I’m aware it’s all in the prep that’s the name of the game with this type of stuff, thanks for all the input guys. Some phosphorus solutions that they sell for removing rust off frames actually seem to do a good job at removing minor surface rust

Let me take a look and will post back for you. I'm sure there were ones that performed better than others.
