What is the purpose of these holes? I see some balancers with two & others with four.

I see. So if I receive one that has two holes & in the pic online it has four, that is because this particular one needed less? Or should it be uniform across the board for each manufacturer?

We are lucky our crankshafts can be balanced as a single unit. I once had an engine where the pulley and balancer were separate parts. The balancing was done on the crankshaft at the factory. Those crankshaft pulleys did not use a rubber damper. However, if someone lost the balancer, it could be replaced, but the engine was never quite right again. The balancer and pulley required marking to keep the position if it needed to be removed and reinstalled to replace an oil seal.

Well I'm just shelled out the $600 for the Toyota crank pulley and I wanted to post a picture for anyone who wants to lust after it. Haha, actually the aftermarket pulleys look a lot nicer! But mine has a Toyota part number molded into the rubber...

My genuine replacement used to look like that LOL .. the black coating wore off quite quickly unfortunately and now looks so fugly
It was only a bit over 400$ with maybe a 25 off MSRP discount many years ago when it failed

    IMO
    for possible causation

That outside black isn’t paint but a coating to prevent rust on cast iron part during shipping (likely over seas)

    Just to prove Glamisman’s statement…

here are 2 different 1970 MC flywheels off 2 different engines (both engines are the same)

    5 holes needed to balance

    3 holes needed to balance
