Totally agree with getting a used ECM. Consider it a test tool. For under $100 it may save you hours of testing and troubleshooting. If it starts then buy a new ECM and resell the used one or keep it as a 'tester.' We should have a TacomaWorld ECM Co-Op. A bunch of ECMs we can ship around and use for testing. :) Pay it forward in shipping to the next guy.

I wouldn't be afraid at all of running a used ECM, 2nd gen and later Toyota ECMs rarely fail without outside "help" and a new one is $600-1200 from Toyota if it's even available.
I trust used parts more than new/reman parts these days, my truck is running a used ECM because I kept my stock ECM with the stock tune when I did a tune on mine.

Now if it was a known high failure part I wouldn't go used unless it was the only option.

Popped open the ECU, it was a junk yard unit already, only held in with two screws.

Yup, it’s cooked. Thanks for all the help so far. I’ll update when we get the new one installed.

You will need to perform the Immobilizer registration once the replacement ECM is installed for the truck to start.
The VIN should also be re-written to match the truck but this isn't necessary for it to run.

What do I even call this thing to start looking for ways to remove/replace it? It’s the rear fender support rod mounting point.

We already bought the bracket, but the bolts snapped removing them.

Never mind, a unibit on a 90° was able to handle it.
