I am aware this may seem like nothing to people living in the northeast. I have owned my 2021 Tacoma for 2 years and I purchased it in Colorado with no rust. Since then I have only driven the car within Colorado and now there is rust on the frame? Did I do something wrong to cause this?

^It's normal for welds to rust first, sometimes while the truck is still on the dealer's lot, due to poor paint adhesion to the weld cladding.

Do they salt the roads in Colorado?

Coat that frame with some lanolin based rust treatment!!! It's rusting because welds hold paint very poorly and the metal, due to the heat from welding, becomes a bit more susceptible to rusting.

Most Tacomas leave the dealer like that.

Hit it with some Fluid Film, or if you want to get a little more involved, Cosmoline. Both are available on an Amazon and both come in black-dyed variety, which I prefer. Neither are that hard-drying rubberized crap that will trap salt up against the frame. Fluid film lasts about a year, Cosmoline will last at least a few years, or maybe longer. Both are non-hardening, self-healing, and stay somewhat tacky. Both attract dust, and turn brown, but the metal underneath will be protected and rust free. Fluid film will wipe off with a rag, Cosmoline, once it tacks up, is more difficult to remove, which is the point.

My '21 has had little spots of surface rust on the frame here and there since brand new, and I'm in one of the most rust-inhibited places anywhere on earth - the Socal desert. Oxidization happens everywhere, but yours is a non-issue.

Jesus fuck. Come on man. Go do your research. We have been posting pictures like this for over 4 decades. Stop begging people to assure you

Why would you think your truck is immune to rust, especially in CO?

The paint cracks by heat, and steel will naturally rust when exposed to air & water ( rain ). I wouldnt worry too much, that will take 30-40 years to see holes in frame, because there is no salt on the road. If you must, just sandpaper to bare metal it and paint it over. Or yea apply fluid film/wool wax but that might be waste of time & money because without salt on the road, rust will take decades to eat that steel.

You see how bright that rust is ? because its surface, it will take you 10-20 minutes to remove that with sandpaper and see raw metal.

Normal. Wash undercarriage after every trip into the mountains during snow. Also, a protective spray helps.

    I prefer woolwax...
I took a six pack of spray cans when I went to pick the taco up out of state.

Got it done on the way home...

I'm in CA, but head to the snow often.I don't want to deal with rust.

Mine has the same and I’m in the Bay Area. Not as dry as So. Cal, but pretty dry and definitely no salt on the roads.

...buy some corroseal, (or similar) wipe it clean and paint it on, goes on milky, dries shiny black, and disregard that it is called converter / primer, or the like spot paint over it a few days later, and then do an annual oil type spray....
