    Hi all,

Hoping to grab a name for a reputable spot place in SD County that I can have my roof and hood painted before it gets any worse:

Update for any possible future viewers: Toyota DLR gave a quote of ~$2,600.00 for both the hood and roof panels. If you have paint issues on the left and right panels on the outside of the sunroof weather stripping its extra (apparently those are separate panels requiring more labor...).

DLR tech and paint guy knew exactly this was a Toyota paint issue, but Toyota hasn't approved non-white Tacoma paint repairs. They both advised me to make a complaint to Toyota so the data is there for them to issue a repair campaign. Right now only white paint of Tacomas was approved because enough white paint Tacoma owners and owners of all white Toyota models complained, leading to some vehicle review sites posting pictures of the terrible paint jobs.

If you have an issue with the Gen 3 paint (regardless of the truck color), I urge you to make a complaint with Toyota and the NHTSA in writing. In writing tends to make people actually do their job, and it gives you a receipt/copy of when you made the complaint. In my experience, if enough people complain to the NHTSA, they will start investigating, or some vehicle review sites will pick up the complaints and give it more publicity.

Who knows, with enough publicity later down the road, Toyota might do the right thing, and we may get a free paint job.

I will be back with more quotes.

a lovely win of a story for MAACO in oceanside - i had them do some rust repairs and full respray of my 1st gen in the stock black and it came out great - i did remove most of the trim bits myself to make it as easy as possible but the truck sparkles like new

the internet is full of bad maaco paint jobs so i'm not trying to say they're wrong, just that at least sometimes they get it right. sub 3K for rust repairs and full spray at their middle tier level, not too shabby

I appreciate the specific MAACO location! I have heard of some good ones but none were near SD so this is helpful. Good work is good work no matter where it’s from.

i will say their work with fiberglass left a little to be desired - a bit of rust near the rear brake light on the cab roof needed to be removed and then filled and while it is fully functional and watertight...its not show quality by any means - the rest (including a bit on the corner of the windshield) is seemingly well done (not noticeable to the eye at least) and the paint all over is great. there was a fair bit of orange peel that i was concerned about when i picked it up but they said as it continued to cure it'd go away and they were mostly right. in the end a $2k paint job will never be more than a 2k paint job, but they were friendly, fast, and i'd go back to them any time

i'll take some after the rains this weekend, its dirty as hell right now and with (hopefully) rain on the way it'll be a mess i'll deal with next week

i do park it outside, i had it done in october, i have no doubt that it wont last as long as the oem paint and clearcoat though since the OEM clear generally fails....who knows. it looks GREAT from 10 feet away, and still really good from up close.

i'll grab one of the fiberglass repair by the roof brake light too, the spot on the hood and windshield are both unnoticeable

Looks good! I have the typical front edge hood chipping. Wonder what they'd charge to paint and blend in with the fenders. Any insight?

I had my hood and roof repainted by raising star collision in chino a few years ago for $1100 they color matched perfectly and they use ppg paint with lifetime warranty. You can text the owner lee pics of your rig for a quote he’s a good dude
