That's unreal. Looks like they used spray cans from Walmart. Maybe it's a new Zebra edition Tacoma.

Yeah, no striping on my Celestial from Guanajuato, build date 02/25. I do have some poorly-blended orangepeel on the cab passenger side (it's better on the driver's side). Not bad enough to the point that I am going to raise the issue with my dealer. I feel for ya with the striping, though - I would definitely make a stink about that.

It’s looking like the trucks being assembled at the De Baja California plant is the one with the paint issues. Thanks

I thought all of the Tacomas came out of the Baja plant? Are there different facilities in Mexico?

They’re two facilities in Mexico that assemble Toyota Tacomas, De Baja California and Guanajuato.

    I can't see the issue.

The robots must be doing a bad job painting.

    Will it buff out?

    It will not...
I think metallic silver might be 3 stage...
base, the silver tint, & clear...
regardless if its 2 or 3 stage, the issue is under the clear....
Theres no repairing without a repaint, we dont pay $40k+ for a repaint from the get-go.....

For the most part, theyre not even offering repaint, just buy back...
    which is a good thing!!!
Opportunity to use their truck for 6 months for free....

    My neighbors hood...
Not as noticeable in the pic like Cappy's pic but its definitely there in-person...
Same spot as Cappy's, across driver side of hood...
You can also see it on his top fender rails & top bedside rails, it's pretty much everywhere....IMG_4719.jpg

That looks like it was painted wrong, and then poorly prepped and repainted.

I had a GMC Sierra that was damaged in transit and the rear fender panel looked like that, turns out they dented it and a half ass repair.

…and didn’t tell me about it. I also bought it when it was raining.

I don’t know if they damaged it, but they could’ve done an inspection on the paint and instead of starting from zero they just decided to give it another spray because that’s what metallic paint looks like if it goes on unevenly. It globs on like that.

Color coat cannot be buffed out. First of all if it's thin there's nothing to buff. Secondly, you'd have to burn through the clear coat to get to the color. The only fix is a repaint. The way it works is a thin coat of color is sprayed, supposed to be enough to cover completely. Then the clear is sprayed. Supposedly enough coats to last and be somewhat chip resistant. So it seems some trucks are getting crappy color coats and I think all are getting super thin clear coat. Paint and sheet metal have become thinner and thinner due to the need to cut weight thanks to Gubmint CAFE standards. Funny how they pull a MPG number out of their ass that the manufacturers have to meet then also demand the addition of countless weight adding nanny and big brother systems.

Toyota was in such a hurry to get trucks across the boarder before tariffs they couldn't be bothered to paint the trucks correctly.

Definitely sprayed uneven was the cause...100%
Dont think they have real 100% accurate QC's inplace when it comes to paint...
Think theyre just hoping nobody notices it & it gets repaired by dealer bodyshop after the fact...
Dont think manufacturing plants are set-up for resprays...
IF someone actually noticed it, wouldnt have been until after the clear was sprayed & at that pint its too late for a correction....

This pre-dates any talks of tariffs. The silver one's I noticed on the lot with the right bedside defects were built and delivered before the tariff war. Plus we have that horrendous white paint job that the owner got a buyback on late last year. Looks like they've been doing crap paint jobs from the get go and they don't seem to care since it's still occurring.

Your post reminded me that a couple of vehicle reviewers like David Chao (automotive engineer who likes to talk about Lexus and Toyota) have used a paint thickness gauge in the past. That thickness, based on your photos, should be measurable especially on the hood where it should be consistent across that surface. If nothing else, the Toyota dealer should have one to measure that variance when submitting complaints to Toyota corporate.
