I'm in the market for a truck, and am all but ready to pull the trigger on a Tacoma. My main issue is this. I have a bunch of music gear I'm out with most weekends, and some of it won't fit under a tonneau cover by about 2 inches (case is 23 inches tall).

I'm avoiding a full leer cap or similar because I want to use the bed open also. I'm looking for something waterproof, and ideally lockable. A soft topper is close but I feel like I'd destroy one.

Really, some sort of raised tonneau would be ideal, but I haven't been able to find anything suitable yet. Anyone here have an idea?

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
4 Runner for the gear and a small trailer for the open bed needs.

Don't off-road? A Highlander / trailer combo would cost less going in and have a lower TCO

Purely speculation on your use case here but unless you're bringing the whole band with you you could always get a double cab and keep the cases that don't fit in the bed in the cabin.

Edit to add: put the bass player in the bed and put your gear in the cabin

Softopper again. Mine is also 10 years old and is watertight. The tinted rear window and/or solid panel is a great theft deterrent. Most crackheads operate like a T-Rex, if they can't see it then it doesn't exist.

Put a Diamondback HD tonneau on my 25 Tacoma Pro. Super secure, waterproof.... but expensive. Good luck

This is all really, helpful -- thanks everyone.

Yeah I'm bringing way too much gear in general. Drums, a reasonable PA, and often the guitar player and his rig.

I managed to convince a sales rep to let me lug my kick drum into the show room and try to stuff it into the back seat of a '25 Tacoma. Somehow it didn't fit, but did into a '21. I think the door opening geometry is less angular on the previous model. Maybe the doors open wider too. Not sure

The soft topper seems to be the call in the end. As much as I appreciate the 4Runner, I want to spray this thing out with a pressure washer from time to time, and man I'd love to stop crawling around inside a vehicle to position cases. Been doing that for 20 years.

    Thanks again folks.
