It’s like you’ve been reading my mind…hahaha Version 2.0 will have the whole box slide out on 6’ slides. I have an initial plan for this. The drawer with the stove will have a flip down side allowing access to stove without moving it. And the side cubby will have a removable panel at the back for long storage.

 

Kind of yes. I won't use a lift top simply because that surface would become inaccessible. The stove on the tailgate is already close to being too high up for the Mrs and the truck isn't even lifted yet lol

Will your stove sit parallel or perpendicular to the drawer? A few posts up an idea was mentioned for a flip down side, and I have a design drawn up with this idea opening to the right side in order to stand in front of the stove and clear the tailgate. If putting it on the left side you'd need to pull the whole unit out farther to clear the tailgate, might be easier with a 6ft bed though. Downside of that is you're now getting so far out away from the truck that you'll lose awning coverage.

 

How well does your stove shelf handle the weight of a stove with pots/pans/food/water? Seem to hold up fine? Does it get wobbly or sag or anything?

 

I like the lift top vs having a hinged top so you dont have to clear everything off to open it. Not really used as a working surface either

 

Most people seem to overbuild. You can use 1/2” ply for most if not all if you back up your connections with t-slot nuts (available from 6-32 to 1/2-13) instead of using wood screws. Plus the threads are internal and the washers is built in so nothing sticks out and drawers can use more of the space. Even sleeping platforms can be thinner, just run the face grain the short way across any spans. Same for the drawers. Use the strength of the drawer glides and t-slots/machine screws and the drawer can be just a lightweight shell. For drawer that don’t need to slide out past the tail gate you can dispense with glides and just use wheels that follow the floor grooves. You can make them tandem with the first being a folding table and the second on a pulley to access it or haul it forward to the bed front.

 

Surprisingly well, there’s a little give to it when transferring weight but I wouldn’t describe it as wobbly. It sags a little initially due to the paracord stretch which is why the front 2 knots are slip knots so I can level it out.

I do get a little nervous with a full pot of boiling water on there for obvious reasons, but no issues yet…

Thought about swapping the cord for thin steel cable to eliminate the stretch, might do that at some point

 

Finished...mostly.
I still need to;
-Figure out hooks for my MTB helmet and for my floor pump inside the main drawer.
-Make some dividers for the main drawer to keep my chainsaw and recovery gear separate from my MTB gear
-Make some dividers for the pantry drawer so my stove and pots stay put.
-Maybe make a notch in the side of the fridge drawer so I can get water from my jug or maybe just put some spacers under the jug. Don't know yet.

 

Copied the Bambeds system, would have loved to buy them but the cost to ship them to Canada, and the bad USD/CAD exchange rate, was prohibitive.

3/4 inch birch plywood, oil primer and exterior paint. Not as nice as bambeds, but for a cost of ~ $110 USD I can't complain.

I have an idea. I have not seen the same, yet. If anyone has, please let me know.

(2) 22" sleeping platforms allows
13" open area for feet
So we can sit on the sleeping platforms.
(2) 13" wide flats would stabilize the sleeping platform.
1 can be removed for sitting, and the other maintains the stability.

This is what I ended up with @2Toyotas, Half bambeds and I build a few custom pieces to match the bambeds...

 

What I've done:


It's evolved as I built it up. The two totes in the 2nd picture now reside in the front, as I added solar/2nd battery (AGM)/1kw Inverter. My fridge sits on the right, just inside the tailgate. In between, I can slide my EZ-Up and I have room for additional things in front of the fridge. The last pic shows my bicycle mount, which easily comes out for camping. I also have an RV tent that I can put up behind the truck that attaches to the back and opens up to give me a 10x10 room to work out of if it's raining or if I'm staying at the same place for a couple of days. This gives me flexibility for what the trip calls for.

I made a rear seat delete tray that stores all of my recovery gear and other misc stuff. It also gives me more room to stash stuff to keep it more secure or dry.

Thanks. I have a plan that I want room for 2 to sleep, and an easy adjustment to make room for sitting with our feet on the floor.
I do not plan for sleeping in the truck as a first option, that is the Springbar tent.
The truck is an option for those quick nights, and we might be sitting in it for some time.

@2Toyotas nice! Same here. My setup only uses the 3 legs that screw in and an be removed in 1 minute or added the 2 extra squares to make a full deck. We use a big ground tent for family camps. That cap you got is badass with that door/tailgate combo.

 

Love this set up. If i didnt already have my bamboards modded set up, id buy a welder and go to town haha

 

I'm a metal kind of guy. Give me wood, I'll use it to heat the shop in the winter. Give me some steel, I'll make some stuff.
