    I been chasing the wubwub.

The right bearing felt almost normal albeit loose internally.

The left side (has not been noisy) has the bearing flopping limp on the shaft. I suspect that the shaft is FUBAR.

Would anybody trust a repop axle from ebay purchsed for $227? Id rather stick to oem but im having an interesting time of it.

Found somebodys alleged interchange list. Curious if anybody can confirm or deny accuracy.

The nearest junkyard axle on car-part.com is from a 97 4runner 4x4 abs rwd. By the alleged list it should work.... is there anything im missing?

    Thanks

Pull the axle shaft and take it to a machine shop to check for run out before you replace it...

Are you saying that the inner race of the bearing disintegrated?

    It did something
Its flopping loose on whatever is left of the axle shaft. You get motion like that.... its carving away critical metal...

    To the carnage hounds, perhaps.
I need to verify that (anything with a 6 bolt axle) 1996 to 2004 4 runner or tacoma will actually fit...

    Lol.
Ill get a pic up once i get my brake backing plate off. Whether thats at the machine shop or with a sawzall is to be determined

It's far more likely that the ball bearings themselves are damaged than the inner or outter race.

As far as the axle shafts are concerned, you should stick to a 6 lug that matches your diff (open 8.4", locked 8") and abs (with or without). I am not sure if the axle shafts between the 8.4" and 8" are different or not, but the ones without abs might not be machined to accept the tone ring.

Likely aside... i can see the inner race hanging loose on the shaft.

Unfortunately my truck is non abs but has abs axles with tone rings in the stackup and necessary for proper seal engagement. Has factory toyota branded plugs in the abs sensor holes. Must have been a dealer installed option that year.

Clearly there are a lot of details you're leaving out.

Maybe you can fill in any low spots with weld, and then have a machine shop machine it back into spec on a lathe

I am curious, is the bad bearing a quality, meaning was the bearing an Toyota or SKF, made in Japan or China or ? Back in the day when I did this for a living, my rank of bearings was German, Japanese then US, nowdays I am not even sure if you can get a decent bearing anymore.

Im headed in tomorrow if anybody is open to get this dealt.

Bought a Yukon branded axle from autozone for 280
More than i wanted to spend but a shitloaf less than most.
    Hope its trustworthy
Id feel a lot less confident with a welded up and lathe cut unit. I was scared enough after the idjit that replaced the bearings last time couldnt figure out the snap rings. Cut one of the retaining rings and made a notch in the axle. Welded it. Its been in the back of my head for the last 4 years as a potential crack

    Whatever came from NAPA
I see the comments that axle lube kills bearings.
They were leaking from day one
The idjit at the shop refused to invert the retainers.
    I shrugged it off.

I was horrfied at what i found when i dumped the lube. Pitch black. Maybe half a quart... cant believe i didnt kill the diff. Could explain why the pinion was warm.
I guess i shrugged it off and promptly forgot about it when i changed all the other gear lube on the truck a few months ago. Dumb
