I am looking for input on potential causes of metal shavings in the oil. I was climbing up a steep hill on a gravel road when the oil pressure warning light came on. I immediately cut it off, put the truck into neutral, and allowed it to roll back down the slope. When I went to crank it again it sputtered for a few seconds then started running normally again. Cut it off again, and pulled the dipstick which had metal shavings on the end. I wiped it off and drew it into the truck, once again metal shavings surfaced. I stuck my head under the fender well on both sides, theres was no knock or tapping at all.

Through some research it seems like I might be experiencing a failing oil pump, however I would like to inquire thoughts from more experienced operators than me. Thanks for any help.

If your dipstick binds when going in and out, you could try shaving the dipstick to see if that is the cause of metal shavings.

The oil pressure light is known to come on when on a steep hill.

The oil light and the metal shavings may or may not be related.
